  • Low-cost electrochemical impedance spectroscopy system for corrosion monitoring of metallic antiquities and works of art

    Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is recognized to be a powerful and noninvasive technique to test the integrity of protective coatings on memorials, but commercial EIS systems are rather costly though versatile devices. This paper describes a low cost and portable EIS system that is based on a compact digital signal processor (DSP) board and embeds the potentiostatic function so that it can be used without requiring an external potentiostat. The software that runs on the DSP is designed to analyze the electrochemical impedance only in a reduced frequency range in order to produce a simple corrosion alert result. The device is equipped with a digital interface and can be connected to a personal computer to carry out a complete frequency analysis and perform a more complex data processing.

Since accurate estimates are important in the study, we propose a spatial regularization method by adding a quadratic penalty term in the cost function instead of directly using classical least squares. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by applying it to experimental and simulated data to show improved performance when compared with unregularized estimation.

  • Self-guided ultrasound phased arrays for noninvasive surgery

    A phased array system for therapeutic applications was shown to be capable of operating in a pulse-echo imaging mode. The transducer was characterized in synthetic aperture imaging of wire targets as well as imaging a speckle generating phantom. Theoretical and experimental results have shown that suitable images could be obtained using this 1 MHz transducer in a field of view (FOV) that matches its therapeutic focusing and steering range. Therefore, the transducer has the potential to be used in a self-guided mode where the imaging data can be used in refocusing the therapeutic beam. Here, the authors show the first experimental verification of refocusing this transducer in the presence of strongly scattering structures based on pulse- echo data.

  • Cuffless and Noninvasive Tonometry Mean Arterial Pressure Measurement by Physiological Characteristics and Applied Pressure

    We developed a cuffless and noninvasive measurement technique of blood pressure using tonometric pressure sensor. With observation that the maximum value of a pulse pressure is not obtained at mean arterial pressure (MAP), we have figured out MAP based on the physiological characteristic including the elasticity of wrist tissue, the depth of blood vessel. Through an analysis of 198 clinic data, we have induced the regression equation of the MAP. The probability of the elasticity, depth and AP<sub>M</sub> to explain MAP was 92.1%. The mean difference and the standard deviation between the MAP predicted from the regression equation and the MAP measured by commercial cuff type BP meter were Z-3.183 mmHg and 5.133 mmHg respectively. Comparing the results with the American national standard for electronic or automated sphygmomanometers, we can conclude that the results are quite reliable and promising. Detecting only one part of the body and using only one device are quite advantageous over other BP measurement technique. Our technique makes new way for the cuffless BP measurement

  • The anticipation of intracranial hypertension using noninvasive measurements of intracranial pressure

    Major causes of death and handicap in the newborn are brain hemorrhage and cerebral ischemia. A description is given of research directed at identifying the onset of reducing intracranial compliance by combining noninvasive measurements of intracranial pressure, obtained from the anterior fontanelle, with adaptive signal-processing techniques. The objectives are to detect problems at an early stage before a significant rise in pressure occurs and to predict the effectiveness of therapy.<<ETX>>
