Tentative scheme of organization and administration, for a state university

Proceedings of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1911

Some time ago the writer had occasion to look into the matter of the organization and conduct of universities, especially state universities, with a view to making some suggestions along these lines in connection with a state university. A search for printed matter bearing upon the subject seemed to indicate a scarcity of available information of a specific nature and ...

  • Tentative scheme of organization and administration, for a state university

Some time ago the writer had occasion to look into the matter of the organization and conduct of universities, especially state universities, with a view to making some suggestions along these lines in connection with a state university. A search for printed matter bearing upon the subject seemed to indicate a scarcity of available information of a specific nature and most of such matter as was available bore upon certain phases, only, of the subject. It also seemed to indicate that there is considerable room for improvement in the present organization and administration of most, if not all, of the state universities.

  • Method of determining temperature of A-C. generators and motors, and room temperature

In this paper, attention is called to various methods of determining temperature of apparatus, recommendations being made for the use of a definite covering for thermometer bulbs, based on the results of experiment. Measurement of temperature by resistance is confined to the rotor windings of machines on which thermometers cannot be applied; the inaccuracy of this determination for stators is pointed out. Temperature measurement by special coils inserted in the windings is recommended for machines of fairly high capacity, wound for 6600 volts and above. For room temperature determination in general, a metal cylinder covering for thermometer bulbs is recommended. Room temperature determination is shown to be of primary importance and a fair room temperature must be arrived at, in different ways, depending on the method of ventilation used.

  • High speed turbo-alternators — Designs and limitations

The paper discusses the design of turbo-alternators with reference to the limitations imposed by very high rotative speeds and large capacities. Bolted- on rotor shafts have superseded through-shafts for very high speeds, and both the radial-slot and the parallel-slot types of rotors have inherent advantages for machines of certain capacities. Ventilation is difficult on account of the large total loss which occurs in a limited space, requiring very large volumes of cooling air at very high velocities. Various ventilating systems are described, and the effects of temperature limitations upon the design are discussed. Insulating materials are considered with reference to their mechanical strength and resistance to heat. The use of mica in various forms has solved many difficulties due to high temperature and to static discharges. The copper and iron losses of these units are analyzed; the total losses are no greater than those of low-speed units of corresponding capacity. Protection against fire within the machine is most effectively provided by doors or valves, entirely cutting off the interior of the machine from the outside air. The regulation is sacrificed to some extent, in order to limit short circuit current, by making the armature reactance as high as the design will permit.

  • A novel algorithm for number factorization

This paper presents a novel algorithm for number factorization, which makes use of some classical calculus theory for real functions. An iterative procedure is constructed that searches for specific features of the image values in a function related with the factorization of the number. Studies of the complexity of the method are being performed and its applicability to very large numbers is being tested. In general, the method can be implemented in a very simple manner and shows promising applicability in RSA encryption.

  • Fuzzy-genetic approach for incorporation of driver's requirement for route selection in a car navigation system

Car navigation systems are now widely used as a component for intelligent transportation systems. Route planning is the most important task of car navigation systems. Though modern car navigation systems incorporate various road information, even dynamic information, to generate optimal route, but they are yet to present routes according to driver's requirements or preferences. Most of the car navigation systems present a single best route or alternate routes according to systems predefined choices which may not satisfy the driver. In this work a fuzzy genetic approach is proposed to generate alternate routes according to driver's requirement and choice with fine tuning by using feed back mechanism. A simple simulation experiment proves the effectiveness and importance of the concept for developing more user friendly car navigation system with an outline of implementation.

  • Design and Realization of High-Reliability Courses Selection System Based on Mainframe

A range of issues often appear in current on-line courses selection system, such as systems crowded, excessive workload and so on. The paper seeks to construct a highly reliable courses selection system based on mainframe to address these issues. This paper boldly tried to combine mainframe technology with Web technology, use mainframe¿s high reliability, high stability, and high concurrency of CICS¿s on-line transaction to build the high reliability of courses selection system that can be allowed by a large number of students to select course online at the same time. The UI is designed of using Eclipse and MyEclipse plug-ins as platform, background by the IBM mainframe, DB2 technology, and CICS technology to complete the combination. The foreground Web interface is friendly and convenient, the background is running in mainframe CICS, stably and reliably. At present the system is running well, students have a good response and the senior school affirmed.
