Oceans 2020 MTS/IEEE GULF COAST

To promote awareness, understanding, advancement and application of ocean engineering and marine technology. This includes all aspects of science, engineering, and technology that address research, development, and operations pertaining to all bodies of water. This includes the creation of new capabilities and technologies from concept design through prototypes, testing, and operational systems to sense, explore, understand, develop, use, and responsibly manage natural resources.

2020 IEEE 21st International Conference on Vacuum Electronics (IVEC)

Technical presentations will range from the fundamental physics of electron emission and modulated electron beams to the design and operation of devices at UHF to THz frequencies, theory and computational tool development, active and passive components, systems, and supporting technologies.System developers will find that IVEC provides a unique snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in vacuum electron devices. We survey the four different combinations of three basic scattering mechanisms by introducing the scattering power entropy and anisotropy parameter.     THERE has been a lot of recent discussion in the media concerning the concept of big data. Few if any of the applications of big data have addressed engineering management needs and concerns. In this short opinion piece we describe a particular application of big data to understanding technology readiness. We first introduce the topic of big data and technology readiness, and then describe the need for automated and distributed approaches to identify promising new technologies. Such a vision may be possible, but it may be a ways out. In the meanwhile we identify four tips to guide best practice while we await a fully functional system.

  • Deep Space Communications

    Communications are required and critical to the success of space missions. This chapter summarizes the theoretical background for telecommunications link analysis and telecommunications design control. It defines the signal performance metrics, such as signal‐to‐noise‐spectral‐density ratios. In addition, the component link parameters that enhance or impair the performance are also defined. The chapter describes the statistical technique that has been used in the design of deep space telecommunications systems. The design procedure for deep space telecommunications systems design and the selection of a particular criterion for conservatism are both driven by weather conditions in the signal path between the ground station antenna and the spacecraft on telecommunications performance. The percentile technique for incorporating weather into telecommunications design control requires the preparations of two design control tables. There are two techniques for incorporating weather into telecommunications design control. The chapter explains the percentile weather technique in detail.

    The X-30, a proposed hypersonic transport that could fly at up to 25 times the speed of sound, is discussed. Two current US programs are described: a joint US Department of Defense/NASA program for a national aerospace plane (NASP), and research into high-speed commercial flight by NASA. The technological requirements of such a vehicle are examined, and the issues raised by the high cost of its development are examined. The question of schedules is discussed.
