2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC)

The 2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2020) will be held in Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), Toronto, Ontario, Canada. SMC 2020 is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report most recent innovations and developments, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics.     The discussion of mobile multimedia broadcasting technologies and service implementation in this chapter is limited to the broadcasting network based scheme can be received by portable or hand-held devices with a small screen. Similar to DTTB systems, digital mobile multimedia broadcasting systems are designed for high-data-throughput (to support multiple low-data-rate services) transmission through wireless channels (VHF/UHF bands in terrestrial, S- or L-band for satellite networks). The chapter summarizes the features of DVB-H, Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC)-M/H, China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB), and the new released DVB Next Generation Broadcasting System to Handheld (NGH) standards with the focus on the technical merits of reliable transmission under wireless, mobile environment and the robust reception using the portable or hand-held devices. ATSC-Mobile/Handheld (ATSC-M/H) is the standard for the DTV mobile transmission developed by the ATSC in 2007. The ATSC-M/H system shares the same RF channel of the traditional ATSC broadcast services.

  • An Integrated Predictive Mobile-Oriented Bandwidth-Reservation Framework to Support Mobile Multimedia Streaming

    Bandwidth is an extremely valuable and scarce resource in wireless networks. Therefore, efficient bandwidth management is necessary to support service continuity, guarantee acceptable quality of service and ensure steady quality of experience for users of mobile multimedia streaming services. Indeed, the support of uniform streaming rate during the entire course of a streaming service, whereas the user is on the move is a challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a framework, together with schemes, which integrates user mobility prediction models with bandwidth availability prediction models to support the requirements of mobile multimedia services. More specifically, we propose schemes that predict paths to destinations, times when users will enter/exit cells along predicted paths, and available bandwidth in cells along predicted paths. With these predictions, a request for a mobile streaming service is accepted only when there is enough (predicted) available bandwidth, which is along the path to destination, to support the service. Simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing bandwidth management schemes in better supporting mobile multimedia services.

  • First-Generation DTTB Standards

    Currently, four first-generation DTTB standards are officially approved by the ITU: Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), Digital Video Broadcasting- Terrestrial (DVB-T), Terrestrial Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting (ISDB-T), and Digital Terrestrial/Television Multimedia Broadcasting (DTMB). This chapter describes the operating principle of the 8-VSB mode within 6 MHz bandwidth where the schematic of channel coding and the transmission system is illustrated. Transmission and multiplexing configuration control (TMCC) information provides control signals for each module. These parts are described in detail here. The key for DTMB lies in the well-designed frame header and body structure, good error correction capability, flexible signal processing in time and frequency domains, etc. The forward error correction coding of the DTMB system is formed by cascading the outer code (BCH code) and inner code (LDPC code).
