  • An efficient genetic algorithm for anycast routing in delay/disruption tolerant networks

    Delay/Disruption tolerant networks (DTNs) have the capacity to interconnect devices and areas that are underserved by traditional networks. Anycast routing can be used for many applications in DTNs, and is useful when nodes wish to send messages to at least one, and preferably only one, of the members in a destination group. In this letter, an anycast routing algorithm for DTNs based on genetic algorithms (GAs) is presented. The GA is applied to find the appropriate path combination to comply with the delivery needs of a group of anycast sessions simultaneously. The proposed GA-based solution uses the concept of subpopulation to produce the next generation population, a limited number of solutions to be evaluated, and yields minimum delay to achieve a specified rate of delivery. Via simulations we show that this scheme can produce good results.

  • Smartphone-Based Vehicle-to-Driver/Environment Interaction System for Motorcycles

    This letter concerns the definition and the implementation of an add-on interaction system for motorcycles. The system consists of a vehicle-to-driver and a vehicle-to-environment communication mechanism, which is based on a smartphone core and on a wireless Bluetooth medium. The system is focused to increase the safety level of a motorcycle and it is constituted by a vehicle with a CAN bus, a compact embedded electronic unit implementing a CAN-to- Bluetooth gateway, a smartphone and a Bluetooth helmet. The driver-to-vehicle interaction is based on an audio interaction located at helmet level. The driver-to-environment is represented by communication via the HTTP protocol. The vocal synthesis, the speech recognition, and the gateway to the web server are implemented on the smartphone. This letter presents the hardware architecture, the software architecture and some case-study implementation issues. An evaluation of the critical aspects of the system is also provided.

The mechanical hardware is mounted on a boot that is worn on the foot, while the electrical hardware is attached to the rider's waist. It is lightweight and portable. The maximum speed of the PMR is 2 km/h. The PMR is capable of going up the slope with an inclination of 10 degrees and speeding up and down by changing the position of the center of gravity of the rider. Through some experiments, the effectiveness of the mechanism of the PMR was confirmed.

  • Magnetoresistors for vehicle detection and identification

    A magnetoresistor sensor is proposed as an alternative to the conventional magnetic loop for automobile detection and traffic control. Underground magnetic loops have been used to detect the presence of vehicles at the roadway intersections for the past few decades. The detection scheme is based on the principle that the magnetic flux linking the buried loop changes whenever a vehicle is present above the plane of the loop. However, it has long been recognized that these magnetic loops are intrusive, expensive to install, and costly to maintain. Besides not very reliable, they are incapable of detecting the differences between cars, trucks, and motorcycles. In addition to the permanent magnetism inherent to a vehicle, the Earth's magnetic field also induces in it a magnetic dipole field. The vector sum of the induced and permanent fields may be exploited by a vehicle recognition and identification system or device. By means of systems modeling and computer simulation, the paper analyzes and evaluates such a vehicle sensing device.

  • Development of engine control technique for flex-fuel motorcycle

    This paper presents the development of control technique for an internal combustion engine which controls fuel injections for various gasoline/ethanol mixtures. Yamaha motorcycle, Spark 135i, is tested to find the injection timing for E0, E20, E85 and E100, respectivelty. The experiments are conducted with a speed up to 8000 rpm and working load between 0-95 percents of the full span in Engine Dynamometer. A signal from an oxygen sensor installed at the exhaust pipe are sent to the fuel injection system and served as a feedback signal, in order to maintain a complete combustion during a testing period. The result shows that the injection timing for E20, E85 and E100 are longer than the one for E0 8.0 percents, 34.2 percents and 44.8 percents. The approximate injection timing at different ethanol ratio can be determined by using these experiments with the error of -6.8 7.3 percents. In addition, The results can be used to develop an injection control system for flexible fuel.

  • Motorcycle Riding Safety Education with Virtual Reality

    Young novice drivers are the group of drivers most likely to crash. Young novice drivers who tend to misidentify potential hazards in the traffic environment. There are a number of factors that contribute to the high crash risk experienced by these drivers. Age and lack of driving experience are the main factors behind young drivers having an increased risk of being involved in a road traffic collision. In Taiwan when novice drivers pass the driving test, they need to attend classroom instruction to learn safe driving from fatal crashes. But the classroom instruction has limited direct beneficial effects on the safety of new drivers. In this paper, the researchers use Unity game engine to develop an Android mobile game to enhance learning in driving classroom instruction. The game has to be played at three levels: the learning, the examination and the free drive level. The researchers also develop VR game and simulator based on mobile game which can be used to enhance learning in driving education.

  • Entropy based feature extraction for motorbike engine faults diagnosing using neural network and wavelet transform

    The sound of working vehicle provides an important clue for engine faults diagnosis. Endless efforts have been put into the research of fault diagnosis based on sound. It offers concrete economic benefits, which can lead to high system reliability and save maintenance cost. A number of diagnostic systems for vehicle repair have been developing in recent years. Artificial neural network is a very demanding application and popularly implemented in many industries including condition monitoring via fault diagnosis. This paper presents a feature extraction algorithm using total entropy of 5 level decomposition of wavelet transform. The engine noise signal is decomposed into 5 levels (A5, D5, A4, D4, A3, D3, A2, D2, A1, D1) using Daubechies "db4" wavelet family. From the decomposed signals, the entropy is applied for each levels and the feature are extracted and used to develop a backpropagation neural network.

Now, hydrogen is one of the popular energy resources. The reactant of hydrogen and oxygen is only water and no carbon dioxide, therefore, hydrogen is viewed as clean energy. This study is the probe of analysis and development about using micro plasma methanol water reformers and EFI scooter engines fifth with hydrogen supply system, micro plasma methanol-water reformers can decrease the cost of producing hydrogen, furthermore, they don't have any problems of saving and conveying hydrogen. The reactant, called syngas, of micro plasma methanol-water reformers is directly implemented to EFI scooter engines fifth to burn. The experimental result indicates that in order to gain the achievement of clean energy and new resources development, using the reactant, syngas, of Micro plasma Methanol Steam Reformers to mix gasoline fuel and then implement to engine to burn can reduce the engine consumption approximately 2.23%, BSFC roughly 14.59%, and CO, concentration of the pollutants around 1.8%.
