  • Density- and structure-independent calibration method for microwave moisture determination in granular materials

    The moisture content of granular materials can be determined indirectly and nondestructively from measurements of their dielectric properties at a given frequency and a given temperature. Several sensors have been developed based on this principle and successfully used in different industries including pharmaceutical, construction, and food and agricultural products processing. However, the effects of both the bulk density and structure are troublesome and cause significant errors if they are not taken into account or eliminated by defining appropriate calibration functions. It is possible to determine bulk density by an additional device, such as a /spl gamma/-detector, and compensate for its effect in the reading output of the meter. The structure, i.e., size and geometry in this instance, has a more subtle effect and although it is known to affect the scattering and absorption properties of the material, it is not possible to quantify this effect by measurement or theoretical means, and hence it cannot be compensated for in the final meter output. The only method applied to this time requires individual calibration for each particular material and instrument. In this paper, a new method is presented for moisture determination in granular material independent of bulk density and structure. This unified calibration method is based on the combination of two concepts, i.e., density independence and structure independence, embodied in a function fully defined in terms of the dielectric properties.

  • Towards an operational daily soil moisutre index derived from combination of MODIS, ASAR and AMSR-E data

    This work aims at deriving a methodology for calculation of a soil moisture index based on the apparent thermal inertia (ATI) approach. For the processing, MODIS images have been exploited which have a higher resolution (1 km) if compared with METEOSAT images and are suitable for the ATI calculation. Furthermore, the approach considers the soil moisture estimates derived from SAR sensors and use them to calibrate the information coming from the optical data. The main advantage of this approach is to transform a soil moisture index derived from optical images in soil moisture values by using a comparison between spatial distributed data. In order to make the calibration more robust and consider the variability from different areas, three main test sites have been chosen located in Italian regions with different meteorological and landscape characteristics. In case of anomalous values due to the not appropriate acquisition time, AMSRE soil moisture data are used as prior information in order to improve the estimates.

  • A Computer-Based Soil Moisture Monitoring and Hydrating System

    A computer-based soil moisture monitoring and hydrating system is described in this paper. This system is made of two major components: the sensing unit, and the main station. The sending unit can be located out in a lawn or field, while the main station can be located close to the sprinkler system control. This system provides soil moisture measurements, and it also interfaces with an irrigation system to allow for automatic watering of the soil. Components of the system, as well as tests carried out on the system are described.

  • A new NIR technique for rapid determination of soil moisture content

    As soil moisture prediction model with the whole near-infrared spectral regions is complex and the single-band prediction model is susceptible to environmental impact, a dual-band method for measuring soil moisture content (MC) rapidly was proposed in this study. A total of 116 soil samples were collected and the NIR reflectance spectra of all soil samples were measured. The spectral data were transformed to new spectral data with logarithmic transformation and logarithmic of reciprocal transformation. The spectral bands of the new spectral data and the original spectral data that is sensitive and insensitive to soil moisture content were achieved by correlation coefficient method. The models for prediction of soil MC were developed based on single linear regression (SLR) with the sensitive spectral band and insensitive spectral band. The results show that the prediction precision of the models was high and the highest correlation coefficient of the models reached 0.9913 with the root mean square error of prediction RMSEP of 1.1983%. Thus, it is concluded that the methods used in this paper are available methods for rapid detection of soil MC and also provides theoretical basis for developing a low-cost portable near-infrared moisture meter.
