They are both via-free, using electromagnetic coupling between the bottom and top ground planes, which simplifies the manufacturing of components driven by microstrip electrodes. In the first ones, the bottom ground is not patterned, which makes them particularly suitable ...

  • Coplanar waveguide to microstrip transition in thin polymer film for characterization and packaging of microwave photonic components

We report in this paper two types of broadband transitions between microstrip and coplanar lines on thin benzocyclobutene (BCB) polymer substrate. They are both via-free, using electromagnetic coupling between the bottom and top ground planes, which simplifies the manufacturing of components driven by microstrip electrodes. In the first ones, the bottom ground is not patterned, which makes them particularly suitable to on-wafer measurement of components under development with coplanar probes. An ultra-broad bandwidth of 68 GHz (from 1 GHz to 69 GHz) was achieved with 20-pm BCB. In the second ones, intended for connectorizing components on thin substrate with coplanar connectors, the bottom ground is patterned to match the narrow center conductor (54 μm) on thin substrate to the wide center conductor (127 μm) of the connector with a tapered section, achieving to a experimental bandwidth 13 GHz for the moment.

  • Phase-Tilt Array Antenna Design for Dense Distributed Radar Networks for Weather Sensing

This paper describes the design of a dual-polarized microstrip series-fed linear array as part of the phase-tilt active planar array antenna being designed for weather sensing for the CASA Engineering Research Center. The dual-polarized planar array antenna is composed of 64 linear array columns, each one formed by 32 aperture coupled patch antenna elements in cascade and excited by a 2 W solid state transmit and receive (TR) module. A straightforward synthesis method is used in order to achieve the desired amplitude and phase excitation of each linear array. Radiation patterns computed using method of moments (MoM) and measured in a compact range system are presented in order to validate the synthesis method proposed.

  • Extraction of electric and magnetic coupling for coupled symmetric microstrip resonator bandpass filter with tunable transmission zero

An effective approach is demonstrated for extracting the electric and magnetic coupling components from the coupling coefficient between two coupled symmetric microstrip resonators. It is found that the extraction provides an extra degree of freedom for circuit design. A transmission zero near passband can be created without any cross-coupling scheme but by properly selecting the parameters of the resonators. An equivalent circuit is derived for characterizing the extraction of the coupling and control of the zero. Two experimental filters are realized and measured to validate the approach.

  • Transmission characteristics of HTS microstrip resonators with a ferrite component

Microwave transmission characteristics of HTS microstrip resonators containing a monocrystalline ferrite layer magnetized in an arbitrary direction were calculated using a RCL approach. Dependencies of the resonance frequencies on the external magnetic field strength and the field orientation angles were analyzed and the results of the calculations were compared with the experiment.

  • Design of Miniaturized Symmetric Microstrip DC Block

This paper suggests DC blocks that have the length of one-eighth wavelength. The miniaturized dc block is completed by that gap of coupled line is reduced to increase an amount of coupling. These dc blocks not only suppress harmonics but also their sizes are smaller than general dc blocks. To verify performance of the miniaturized dc blocks, several dc blocks are designed and fabricated. These dc blocks are applied in PLDRO operating at 6.3 GHz.

  • Slotline-Microstrip Transition on Iso/Anisotropic Substrate : Broadband Design

The two-stub transition design is analysed on isotropic and anisotropic substrates. Broadband design is made by optimizing the slotline and the stub lengths. Sensibility analysis of the behaviour of the whole structure with these parameters shows the slotline length and impedance to be the dominant factors. An extended-octave design can easily be achieved, with VWSR less than 1.5, for double-transitions.
