An overview is provided of the speech coding algorithm, the hardware platform architecture, the firmware development methodology, techniques used for optimizing the firmware of the real-time critical section of the algorithm, and speech quality monitoring methods employed during the firmware development.<<ETX>>

  • MATTRESS: an integrated environment for the design, analysis and programming of digital systems

    MATTRESS is a software environment for the study of digital system behaviour through simulation and the development of software or microcode for the simulated system. A description of the target system, at any level of abstraction from architectural level down to gate level, is used to derive a model of the system in the form of a directed graph, with which simulation proceeds using a demand-driven strategy to reduce unnecessary evaluation. The authors present an overview of the simulation generation process and describe the simulation method and the principal features of the user interface.<<ETX>>

  • Design and implementation of a fibre channel target driver supporting SCSI

    Fibre channel storage area networks (FC-SAN) are effective solutions to address storage management problems caused by very large volumes of data. But the expense of fibre channel devices limits FC-SAN applications. The use of IP networks instead of fibre channel networks will reduce SAN cost, but will also reduce the performance. Therefore, small computer system interface (SCSI) devices were considered to replace FC disks to reduce the SAN cost. A driver for the FC network adapter and the FC target, designed and implemented to support this structure, obeys the SCSI protocol and works in target mode with 200 MB/s bandwidth. The FC target architecture and implementation were compared with the FC initiator. The SCSI command transfer process in the FC layer was described. The performance test results show that the maximum I/O throughput reachs 167 MB/s for read requests and 196 MB/s for write requests (FC bandwidth is 200 MB/s), verifying that the FC target is very efficient. The modularization, efficiency, and low cost of the FC target will enable SAN and fibre channel to be more widely used in applications.

  • IPTV STB remote management architecture according to user usage pattern

    Recently, several research activities on services in IPTV have been reported, and the concern with user's environment has been growing. In this paper, we propose the IPTV STB remote management system which recommends services according to the user's usage pattern by resolving STB fault and configuration. It infers user intention by integrating user input from STB. Also, it recommends the proper service or configuration to the user by user pattern. Therefore. It will be helpful for user-oriented STB by reporting user usage, inferring intention, and resolving conflicts.

  • Audio DRM Conversion between Different DRM Content Formats

    Currently audio content is protected by many kinds of DRM systems each of which adopts different DRM technology. It might be impossible to use the content governed by one DRM System at other DRM compliant device even within one user's domain. In this paper, we propose a scheme that can converts one DRM's DRM content to other DRM's DRM content between different audio DRM systems to make it available in other DRM system.

  • A solution for monitoring operations in harsh environment: A RFID reader for small UAV

    RIFD technologies are applied in a various number of environmental monitoring applications. Efficient energy management is one of the most important prerequisites for the realization of such systems and the power consumption of the RFID tag during radio transmissions must be kept low. The proposed system is composed by the RFID tags distributed on the territory and a reader installed on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The idea is to use the UAV to collect data from the RFID sensors scattered throughout the area by simply approaching them, flying above them, and downloading measured data. This solution can be adopted to implement a grid of independent RFID sensors covering a large area, or to query sensors located in dangerous scenarios for humans. RFID tags are equipped with measuring sensors and store locally the measured parameters; the reader is mounted on the UAV and through an appropriate communication protocols it identifies the tags, downloads the data and sends them to the Ground Control Station (GCS). At the GCS a technician can control the reader through a GUI console: it is possible to start the discovery, download the sensor data (manually or automatically) and clear the RFID tags memory. An ad-hoc mechanisms has also been implemented to join fast tag discovery procedure, fast data downloading and energy saving. The present paper describes the system, presents the testing methodology and analyses some achieved performances in a test scenario.
