    Five-axis complex surface machining on a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine needs CAD/CAM system for the cutter location and orientation data. Since these data are defined with respect to the coordinate system of work- piece, they need to be converted to the machinepsilas control commands in machine coordinate system, through processing so called a CNC post-processing. In this work, a kinematic model method and a efficient algorithm for CNC post- processing have been presented for a typical five-axis milling machine of table rotating/tilting type. The proposed algorithms have been realized in our developing CNC system.

  • Development of C-Band Accelerator Structure with Smooth Shape Couplers

    A new C-band accelerator structure for the SuperKEKB injector linac is under development. This structure corresponds to an upstream half part in a tandem connection of two structures. A measure against RF breakdown is required because the upstream structure is exposed to higher RF field than that of the downstream structure. In order to suppress a RF breakdown around a coupler iris, a fat and smooth iris is adopted for the structure. The coupler dimensions such as an aperture of the iris and a diameter of the coupler cavity is first optimized by computer simulation and then decided by cold model measurements. Electric field symmetry is retained by shifting the coupler cavity from a beam centre. An amount of offset is also decided by simulations. The coupler body is made with a milling machine. A rather rough surface of the inner coupler is finished by an electro-polishing method. This structure will be installed in the beam line of the KEKB injector linac this summer.

    In this research, a distributed simulation system to easily evaluate a very large manufacturing system by synchronizing several different simulators is developed. We designed the distributed simulation system using the High Level Architecture (HLA) as the IEEE1516 standard. A manufacturing adapter to connect manufacturing system simulators with HLA using a plug-in style is proposed. The developed distributed simulation system is confirmed using a case to evaluate a hypothetical manufacturing system which produces motors. Three major commercial based manufacturing system simulators, QUEST, SIMPLE++, and GAROPS, are connected using the developed manufacturing adapter. The storage model method to connect simulation models and synchronize the simulators is used in the case study. A case study is then carried out to evaluate the performance of the cooperative work.

  • Planar fabrication of multilayer piezoelectric actuator by groove cutting and electroplating

    This paper reports a new planar fabrication method of multilayer piezoelectric actuator. In this method, three techniques, dicing, electroplating and laser assisted etching (LAE), were used for constructing the multilayer structure. Prototype actuators with 23-120 active layers were fabricated in this method. The measured displacement was 2.5 /spl mu/m (23 layers) and 7.3 /spl mu/m (120 layers) at 100 V, respectively. These values agree with the calculated values from the piezoelectric properties of the material.

  • A novel 4-DOF parallel manipulator and its kinematic modelling

    In this paper, a novel four-degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) hybrid parallel platform manipulator is presented. The movable platform of the parallel manipulator can translate along two directions and rotate around two axes, respectively. The kinematics model is formulated, which describes the inverse kinematic transformation and forward kinematic transformation. A 5-axis parallel machine tool based on the 4-DOF parallel manipulator is presented.

  • Comparison of sensitivity between the FTSP transducers and piezoresistive wheatstone bridge

    This paper presents the comparison of sensitivity between four-terminal silicon piezotransducers (FTSP transducers) and piezoresistive bridge. This comparison is carried out for the transducer fabricated on the silicon diaphragm with crystal plane [100] and n type of conductivity. It was suggested that the current spread region (CSR) of FTSP transducer have p type of conductivity, the thickness of sensitive layer is much less than the thickness of the diaphragm, the CSR is placed near the edge of diaphragm and rotated by the angle of 45/spl deg/ with respect to the diaphragm, the planer sizes of transducer is much less than the planer sizes of diaphragm. In our paper it's shown that the sensitivity of each FTSP transducer supplied with the current source is equal in extreme case. If voltage source is used, the bridge have the greatest sensitivity if all piezoresistors are small and located near the edge of the diaphragm. It's shown that the sensitivity of FTSP transducer consists 0.75 and 0.4678 of sensitivity of the piezoresistive bridge for rectangular CSR and nonrectangular CSR, respectively. However, the FSTP transducer have the more simple topology and can be more effective for very small silicon chips.

  • Mobility and Kinematics Analysis of a Novel 5-DOF Hybrid Manipulator for Reconditioning of Mold and Die Tools: Part 2

    Two novel hybrid manipulators that can be used for reconditioning of mould and die tools are presented in this paper. These designs have been developed using the knowledge of the different manufacturing process and defects that occur in mould and die tools. The similarities in the two novel hybrid manipulators are: they all used serial kinematics chains that implement parallelograms for linear translations. The designs differ in the manner the parallelograms are used to achieve linear translations. Moreover, rotary motions are achieved differently in these designs. The mechanical architectures and kinematics capabilities of the novel manipulators are presented. Finally, the kinematics capabilities of the developed manipulators are compared with those of selected 5 axis milling machine.
