    The evolution of the Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) to the enhanced 10G-EPON standard looks poised to maintain its position as the leading fiber to the home technology worldwide. Fair bandwidth allocation will be a challenge in the near future in plants where 1G and 10G customer premises equipment coexists. In this paper we propose a distributed algorithm, distributed dynamic scheduling for EPON (DDSPON), to dynamically allocate the bandwidth requested by the user equipment with quality of service (QoS) constraints. The proposed algorithm is scalable and simple to re-configure, which facilitates a smoother transition from legacy 1G to 10G networks. By using the DDSPON, enhanced optical network units (ONUs) will take full advantage of the 10 Gb/s rate while legacy 1G ONUs maintain their service level agreement; as a result, the individual performance is maximized for both groups of ONUs. We also present an analytical model to evaluate the algorithm performance in a coexistent 1G/10G network. Finally, we also illustrate the enhancement of the DDSPON to provision the QoS to different services under the DiffServ architecture. Analysis and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanisms.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time SBA is being implemented in testbed. The result proves that the PIC testbed can be used to test the allocation method of EPON.

  • A novel high utilization idle time free dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm in EPON

    Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is a significant solution in the access layer of network that can provide large amount of bandwidth for different kind of traffic. Idle time in EPON is one of the challenges that could decrease the utilization of EPON channel. To decrease or remove the idle time in EPON network several dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms have been proposed. Some of the proposed algorithms cannot remove the idle time efficiently in some cases. In this paper a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm in EPON has been proposed that efficiently removes the idle time. The proposed algorithm has not any additional cost and increases the channel utilization. The simulation results show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • EPON Based Communication Service Framework under Coal Mine

    To solve cascade arising problem of traditional networks under coal mine, this paper has proposed an EPON based Communication Service Framework (E-CSF) under Coal Mine. First, the structure, principles and characteristics of EPON network are analyzed, which focuses on the application of EPON network for the construction of safety information network under coal mine. EPON optical network can completely avoid the passive nature of the external device electromagnetic interference, reduce the circuit and the external device failure rate, improve system reliability. Secondly, EPON can make the ground LAN and monitor network under coal mine connected seamlessly, which will greatly enhance the efficiency, convenience for management and reduces the cost of monitoring communication system. So it is a good solution to communication distance, speed, cost and security problem under coal mine.

  • Decentralized SIEPON-based ONU-initiated Tx/TRx energy-efficiency mechanism in EPON

    An Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has the least energy consumption among access network technologies and is the best candidate for improving energy consumption by time utilization. Current studies have proposed OLT- initiated schemes to turn off the transmitter/ receiver of an optical network unit (ONU) for a substantial time in order to achieve energy savings. In this paper, a new SIEPON-based ONU-initiated energy-saving mechanism is proposed in which the ONU calculates the transmitter (Tx) sleep duration based on the current queue state and maximum boundary delay requirements and forwards it to the OLT; then, the OLT calculates the ONU's receiver (Rx) sleep duration and decides the ONU's sleeping mode in Tx or TRx sleep mode. Furthermore, the Sleep manager and Green DBA and TRx controller components are proposed in the OLT and ONU architectures to more precisely manage the energy-saving mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed energy-saving mechanism significantly improves energy savings up to 47% and 42% in the up- and downstream directions, respectively, and guarantees the QoS requirement in terms of mean packet delay, packet loss, throughput, and jitter. Moreover, the proposed energysaving mechanism has better delay performance compared with the OLT-initiated energy-saving mechanism such as upstream centric scheduling.

  • Inter-ONU Scheduling Scheme for QoS Guarantee in 10G EPON

    Recently, more and more services need high quality bandwidth. In order to satisfy those services, high-speed networks are needed. The Task Force team of IEEE 802.3ah set a standard as Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) that is a next generation subscriber access network. IEEE 802.3av developed 10G EPON which has 10 times more capacity than EPON to solve the high quality problem. Research on 10G EPON has been conducted by Kramer, but still there were limitations in providing Quality of Service (QoS). Therefore, this paper suggests a Time synchronization method, resource reservation method, and bandwidth allocation method in 10G EPON. The OPNET simulation results show that our proposed ideas can provide enough services in 10G EPON.

  • Low-latency dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation algorithm for NG-EPON

    Recently, the IEEE 802.3ca Task Force has been working to standardize the next-generation Ethernet passive optical network (NG-EPON) to fulfill future bandwidth demands. NG-EPON allows an optical network unit (ONU) transmission to be scheduled on multiple wavelength channels simultaneously. This will increase network capacity up to 100 Gb/s, along with flexibility, as any of the channels can be allocated from the four wavelength channels, each having a capacity of 25 Gb/s. However, it also raises many technical aspects to be considered while deciding on an optimum scheduling strategy for NG-EPON (100G- EPON) architecture. This paper proposes a dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm for NG-EPON to schedule upstream wavelength channels while providing a low average packet delay and catering frame resequencing problem. An online scheduling framework with gated service grant sizing policy has been demonstrated in this work. The proposed DWBA algorithm's performance is evaluated in comparison with legacy interleaved polling with an adaptive cycle time (modified- IPACT) and recently proposed water-filling algorithm-based DWBA (WF-DBA) algorithms. Simulation results confirmed the validity of the proposed DWBA algorithm.
