  • Design and fabrication of neural implant with thick microchannels based on flexible polymeric materials

    Mechanical guidance can be used to provide a supporting structure through which and onto which regenerating axons can grow. The dimensions of the mechanical guide need to be suitable to support regenerated axon outgrowth and vascularisation. In this paper, we present the design and fabrication process of a three-dimensional (3D) device comprising a bundle of parallel (100mum times 100mum) microchannels with embedded electrodes. This device can be used as a 3D electrode interface for peripheral nerve repair. The skeleton of the device is entirely made of flexible polyimide films. Gold microelectrodes and microchannels of photosensitive polyimide are patterned directly on polyimide substrates. After fabrication, the 2D electrode channel array is rolled into a 3D channel bundle that fits the anatomy of the peripheral nerve. Samples are rolled and inserted into 1.5 mm inner diameter tube.

We are developing an advanced dual-mode 'bus system with Toyota Motor Corporation. In this paper a real-time operation scheduling method to respond to unexpected incidents and demand changes is proposed. The operation scheduling is defined as a combinatorial optimization problem. Our scheduling method has been tested in a simulation using hypothetical roads and traffic demands.

    Manipulation of bio-cells and molecules is an important technique in various medical, biochemical analysis systems. Here we demonstrate the manipulation of blood cells in micro-capillary tube using flexural acoustic wave propagating along the tube. The capillary tube is used as a mechanical guide for both the blood and the acoustic wave, where the acoustic interaction occurs very efficiently over a long working range. Figure 1 shows the schematic of experimental setup. The acoustic transducer composed of a PZT disk and a horn generates a flexural acoustic wave when rf signal is applied to the PZT. The ID. and O.D. of the tube were 75 mum and 140 mum, respectively. Nearly 100% reflection of the wave at the end of the tube resulted in the formation of a standing wave along the tube.

A custom multifunctional acrylate photo-polymer with good thermal and mechanical properties was used to fabricate the structures.

  • Evaluation of an assistive controller for reaching following brain injury

    The authors evaluated an assistive control law for reaching along a mechanical guide by three individuals with brain-injury. The controller compensated for passive properties of the arm, including its weight and passive tissue stiffness, as a function of arm configuration. The authors found that such "counterpoise assistance" improved the subject's active range of motion during reaching along the guide, but did not enable subjects to move fully through their available passive range of motion. These results suggest that brain- injured individuals exhibit position-dependent weakness that will constrain future designs of assistive devices for reaching.

  • Velocity tracking control of an axially accelerating string and actuator system

    We present a control strategy for an axially moving string system that achieves vibration regulation along the string and ensures that the string tracks a desired axial velocity trajectory. The control strategy is implemented by utilizing the roller torque inputs applied at the entry and exit points of the string and a pair of control forces applied to the string via an interstitial mechanical guide. Given the hybrid model of the string system (i.e., the distributed parameter field equation coupled to discrete actuator equations), Lyapunov-type arguments are utilized to design a model- based control law that exponentially regulates the axial velocity tracking error and the string displacement along the entire span. The proposed control law is based on measurements of the string displacement, velocity, slope, and slope rate at the mechanical guide.

  • Motion guidance experiments with Scooter Cobot

    Cobots assist humans by mechanically guiding motion along software-defined paths or surfaces. Cobot design has been extensively studied previously. This paper reports the first systematic experimental study of motion guidance with a cobot. We investigated the movements of seven operators with the Scooter cobot in representative environments. Analysis of the force exerted by the operators and the trajectories reveals significant differences between guided movements (GM) and free movements (FM). While FM requires learning for each novel task, GM is optimal from the first trial: Less effort is required to move in GM than in FM, Movements in GM are faster, smoother, and require less back and forth correction than in FM. These advantages demonstrate the strength of the Cobol concept. The results further suggest that operators guided by the Scooter can handle objects in a more "open-loop" way than with a dumb trolley, and so perform faster and concentrate on other aspects of the manipulation task, potentially resulting in increased productivity and fewer injuries.
