  • Electroplated soft magnetic materials for microsensors and microactuators

    A number of micromachined magnetic sensors and actuators require materials with desirable magnetic properties as well as thicknesses in the range of several microns. Materials with appropriate magnetic properties have been reported for magnetic storage applications, but often in thickness ranges insufficient for other sensors and actuators. We report the development of an electroplating bath for the deposition of a high permeability, low coercivity material, a NiFeMo alloy. Using this bath, the NiFeMo alloy may be electrodeposited up to 5 microns in thickness. In addition we report the use of a NiCo soft magnetic alloy, and the use of NiCo and NiFe layered films for improved magnetic performance.

  • Using global control and SMES to damp inter-area oscillations: an exploratory assessment

    This paper presents results of a study whose objective is to show if there is an interest to use the superconducting magnetic storage (SMES) and the global control to improve the inter-area oscillations stability. Geometric measures of controllability and observability are used for input/output selection. The linearized model of a two areas four generators power system obtained by using SDYN software is used in this work. Effects, on the input/output pairs selection, of the excitation systems, the power how and the SMES sites on the network are highlighted. It appears that the power flow influences the measurements choice in comparison with the excitation system which has an impact on control signal selection. For all the studied cases, the results obtained show that the global control is well suited to solve the problem of inter-area oscillations stabilization.

  • Increment of coercitive force in magnetic coupled structures - Application to magnetic memories

  • On-line integrated cardiological database storage on magneto-optical disk autochanger

    A large integrated cardiological database is operative in the authors' Department to collect and store clinical information of more than 50,000 patients. Character-based data are entered from 21 workstations of the network. EKG tracings are entered by RS232 connection and by image scanner. Mass storage of about 600 Mbyte per year is required. To maintain at least 10 years of an on-line documentation, a 10 Gbyte magneto-optical disk autochanger was added to the network one year ago. An original software manager (JBMan) was implemented to regulate data transfer, transparently to the end user. The new information produced daily is transferred at night-time by JBMan to optical disk. All available information for the patients booked for the next day is then restored. This allows at least 95% on-line routine work through direct access to the server hard disk. Unforeseen queries can cause an optical disk change to take place into the autochanger with 15 second delay for the operator. At present, more than 109,000 files are stored on optical disks. The system seems suitable for daily operation of a large cardiological database shared on-line on the network.<<ETX>>

  • Recording properties of patterned Co/sub 70/Pt/sub 18/Cr/sub 12/ perpendicular media

    Summary form only given. Patterning magnetic media with pre-defined, single- domain magnetic bits is one possible candidate for extending magnetic storage densities beyond the limit set by thermal decay for continuous media. In order to study the writing and read-back characteristics of high density patterned media, prototype nanometer-scale magnetic structures were made by patterning Co/sub 70/Cr/sub 18/Pt/sub 12/ perpendicular medium using a focused ion beam (FIB) of Ga/sup +/. The islands have lateral size of 80 nm and have a 103 nm along track period. For comparison, we have also used the FIB to prepare isolated narrow strips of continuous media. The recording properties of the patterned and unpatterned media were evaluated using a static write/read tester.
