Battery booster coils for airplane-engine ignition systems

THE use of battery booster coils and problems in connection therewith requires an understanding of engine ignition-system design and operation. Figure 1 illustrates a complete ignition system consisting of ignition switch, two magnetos, radio-shielded harness, spark plugs and booster magneto. One magneto is illustrated completely assembled, and the other in skeleton form showing electric and magnetic circuits.

  • Generator Maintenance Testing

    Generator maintenance testing refers to tests that are done generally off‐line or for some special condition, as opposed to online testing, which is actually a form of monitoring for diagnostic purposes while the generator is producing power. If there is stator cooling water left in the winding, it will alter the test results and give a distorted picture of the insulation condition. The main tests done on the hydrogen seals are liquid penetrant (LPI) for cracks and other surface damage, and ultrasonic testing (UT) for babbitt bonding to the seal‐ring components. Rotor winding shorted turns, or interturn shorts, can occur from an electrical breakdown of the interturn insulation, mechanical damage to the interturn insulation allowing adjacent turn‐to‐turn contact, or contamination in the slot, which allows leakage currents between turns.

  • Voltage regulation of generators

    The voltage regulation of generators was recognized to be an important factor in central station operation as early as the first installation of the Edison bi-polar generator. At the time these generators were first installed it was found that owing to the poor regulation of the prime movers, which were very poor regulating engines, that with fluctuating loads lighting was not very satisfactory when connected to the same dynamo which operated power loads, and in order to produce constant voltage a regulator, which was practically an automatic rheostat having the rheostat switch controlled by a solenoid, was designed.

  • Design of a high-power wide-band balun for the high-frequency region

    A balun is a device for matching an unbalanced line to a balanced load. Described here is a balun with a cw (continuous wave) rating, with matched load, of 67.5 kva (kilovolt-amperes) over the frequency range from 2 to 30 mc (megacycles). A transmission-line-type design along with a newly developed ferrite core material and special cooling techniques have been used to achieve this wide bandwidth and high-power capabilities in a small size. A description of the unit and performance test results are included.

  • Magnetic Circuits and Transformers

    This chapter contains basic concepts that can be used for all rotating machines and for power transformers. It presents a more complete analysis and more detailed circuit models of real-life transformers. When the transformer operates in sinusoidal steady state, the corresponding phasor circuit can be used to analyse it. Three-phase transformers can have different construction modes. The chapter briefly presents only the transformers created as a three- phase bank of single-phase transformers. Magnetic hysteresis is important also from an energy point of view: it can be demonstrated that hysteresis phenomenon implies loss of energy in the magnetic circuit of the transformer, which reduces efficiency and heats the iron.
