A group of two popular clustering algorithms has been tested to develop an automatic system for industry. We have concluded that the best suited algorithm for this application in the mineral industry from this group of two algorithms is the k-means algorithm.

  • Reaction durability of a magnesium oxide/water chemical heat pump system

    Magnesium oxide/water chemical heat pump system was studied experimentally to demonstrate the durability for repetitive operation. The results showed that this heat pump had a practical performance for a heat storage system from viewpoints of durability to repetitive operation and heat output. The reactivity of a reactor bed was kept during ten times of repetitive reactions except a lowering of reactivity in initial three reaction cycles. From the reactivity change during whole cycles, it was surmised that this material had enough durability for dozens of times of repetition. The system was able to store thermal energy at about 430/spl deg/C and to supply thermal energy at about 85-125/spl deg/C as a heat amplifier type heat pump, and the heat output power exceeded 50 W per 1 kg of initial magnesium hydroxide during 40-60 minutes. The results of experiments and simulations showed that the heat pump had enough thermal storage capacity and thermal power as a practical system.

  • Large-Area Planar InGaAs p-i-n Photodiodes With Mg Driven-in by Rapid Thermal Diffusion

    Conventional InP/InGaAs/InP heterostructure p-i-n photodiodes (PIN-PDs) are usually fabricated by postgrowth Zn diffusion to form the p-type region. In this letter, we propose a novel method to fabricate the high performance of largearea planar InP/InGaAs/InP PIN-PDs with Mg driven-in process. The Mg driven-in is implemented by spin-on dopant technique using magnesium-silica- film (MgSiOx) source and through the rapid thermal diffusion. The preparation of MgSiOxsource carrier as the p-type dopant for InP/InGaAs heterostructure is more time-saving than that of zinc-phosphorous-dopant-coating because the latter needs an additional step of oxygen (O2) plasma to remove a thick resin layer. To improve the responsivity of vertically illuminated PDs, Si/Al2O3bilayers are deposited as the antireflective coating. The 800-μm- diameter PD with Mg driven-in exhibits a low dark current of 20 pA (or 4 nA/cm2) at -10 mV, a high responsivity of 1.14 A/W at 1550-nm wavelength, an excellent quantum efficiency of 91%, and a good uniformity in the light received area. These characteristics are comparable to those of the PD with Zn driven-in.

  • Synthesis and Size Dependent Properties of Magnesium Ferrites

    MgFe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> samples were prepared by high-temperature thermal decomposition (HTTD), sol-gel, and solid-state reaction methods. The samples (a) prepared by HTTD, (b) annealed at 800degC prepared by sol-gel method under Ar atmosphere, and (c) annealed at 1100degC prepared by a solid- state reaction method have the inverse cubic spinel structure ((Fe)<sub>A</sub>[MgFe]BO<sub>4</sub>) with a space group of Fd3m . The saturation magnetization (M<sub>s</sub>) and coercivity (H<sub>c</sub>) at room temperature are found to be 42.2, 44.2, and 53.3 emu/g and 1.2, 81.6, and 94.1 Oe, respectively. The Mossbauer spectra of all samples have been obtained at room temperature and the sample prepared by the HTTD method was measured at various temperatures ranging from 4.2 K to 300 K. The Mossbauer spectrum of the sample prepared by the HTTD method shows superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and the Mossbauer spectra of the other samples show ferrimagnetic state of six-line shapes having the hyperfine field (H<sub>f</sub>) values of 432 ~ 452 kOe for the A sites and 466 ~ 483 kOe for the B sites. The linewidth and the hyperfine field of Mossbauer spectra is broadened and reduced, respectively, which is reduced the particle sizes.

The multilayered MgB2/B thin films were prepared successfully using electron beam evaporation technique without any post-annealing. No inter-diffusion of magnesium and boron can be detected in the multilayered thin films consist of individual MgB2and boron layers.

  • Lead magnesium niobate dielectrics for high-field applications

    The authors present some preliminary results aimed at exploring the potential of lead magnesium niobate (PMN) as an energy storage dielectric. In particular, relative permittivity and resistivity were studied as a function of electric field. The PMN dielectrics were evaluated as capacitor materials for pulse discharge applications. A series of compositions were prepared and compared to pure and commercial strontium titanate dielectrics. The comparison results are discussed.<<ETX>>

  • Quality of Inward Curved MgB<sub>2</sub> Films Prepared by HPCVD

    Arising from the superconductivity at ~39 K, magnesium diboride (MgB2) films have great prospect in the field of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. To match the geometrical shape of the inner surface of the SRF cavities, the deposition techniques for inward curved MgB2 superconducting films are explored. By using pre-bent metallic substrates, curved MgB2 films were deposited in situ. These curved films show properties comparable with those of the films deposited on a plane surface. Even when the curvature radius (CR) of the films is as small as ~2 mm, the superconducting transition temperature TC(R = 0) of the films reaches ~36 K. The in situ-grown films were also compared with the films prepared by postdeposition bending. In the bending of CR ~ 2 mm, TC(R = 0) of the films falls off to 25 K, much lower than that of the in situ-grown films with the same CR. The scanning results of electron microscope indicate that the wrinkles and cracks appearing in the bending are the main reason for the degradation of transition temperature.
