In general, these recorders are not synchronized among one another and sample the data with very different rates ranging from 200 Hz to 50 MHz. At present, work is going on to integrate the different existing transient recorders into a global system. The article reviews the transient recorder hardware in operation at HERA. In addition, the proposed trigger distribution based on the HERA Integrated Timing system as well as the software concept to archive, retrieve and display the data will be described.

  • Global dose rate in TFTR due to neutron induced residual radioactivities during DT operation

    This paper presents our recent analysis on the global radioactivation dose rate in TFTR for the upcoming DT operation. We show the profiles for the dose rate decay at four representative locations of interest in the test cell area. The dose rate data, together with the extensive radioactivity data base that we have developed, provide us with the essential information needed for the planning of the TFTR operation, decommissioning and waste disposal.

  • Case study: influences on the availability of machine tools

    For more than three years downtimes, data of a press system were observed. Influences on the availability are shown in the data analysis. Mainly in the pre-production, downtimes are caused by changing the tools and by organizational reasons like no crane for changing the tools. General downtimes of press systems are caused by tryouts of actual and new model tools or overhaul. During the production time the machine is not working due to repair, maintenance or organizational reasons. In the case study further effects on the availability are determined. One can see that downtimes of the press systems depend on the production month and on the weekday respectively. The causes of the downtimes cannot be analyzed exactly because only failure categories are given. In order to analyze the repair and maintenance behavior of the machine exact definitions of the downtimes have to be given for the manufacturer and the user of the press system. A simple method for the prediction of the availability in future for the user and manufacturer is given by the simple exponential smoothing. This method also includes seasonal variations caused by vacation employees, company holiday or maintenance of the system during vacations. The example points out that the simple exponential smoothing can be used for forecasting the availability.

  • A model curriculum for CAD

    A model for a computer-aided design course is discussed for teaching undergraduate- and masters-level students in mechanical engineering. The discussions are presented from the point of view of a mechanical engineer. The author's view is that a CAD-based curriculum should include computer graphics/drafting finite-element methods, and design of machine components. Because computers can perform calculations rapidly, their power should be utilized in evaluating alternatives and obtaining optimal solutions whenever possible. It is recommended, therefore, that optimization techniques should also be included in a CAD curriculum. On the basis of these feelings a brief summary is given of eight topics for inclusion in such a curriculum. The topics are: numerical techniques: computer graphics; design databases; design optimization; fundamentals of the finite-element method; linear elastic analysis using finite-element methods; linkage synthesis; and the design of machine components.<<ETX>>

  • Commissioning of the new multipole wigglers in the SRS

    Two new high field 2 T permanent magnet multipole wigglers have been installed into the SRS. This paper describes the effect of the new insertion devices on the SRS lattice. Closed orbit distortion, betatron tune change and emittance blow up have all been measured and the results are compared with lattice model predictions which are based on actual measured magnetic field values.
