  • A document image analysis system on parallel processors

    The paper presents a document image processing system implemented on a set of parallel processors. A preprocessing stage is first used to correct skew from scanned document images. The corrected image is segmented and labelled in a two-step minimum containing rectangle (MCR) detection stage. Text block filtering (TBF) is then done heuristically and the filtered blocks are submitted to a multilayer perceptron (MLP) for recognition of characters. Smoothing of the document image is done during MLP-based character recognition to reduce the preprocessing time. It also reduces the formation of merged characters, a main source of recognition errors in conventional approaches. The MLP identifies the bold words during recognition which are used for automatic indexing of documents. Data is partitioned exploiting the inherent parallelism in a document image data. Communication overhead is small compared to the computation time so that a high degree of parallelization is achieved, reducing the total execution time.

The discourse markers are derived in a totally unsupervised manner based on word statistics used in the information retrieval technique. The statistics is used to select candidates picked up by other information. Experimental results show that the proposed method realizes better indexing performance (better precision at high recall rates) than the simple baseline method using pause information only. Moreover, it is shown to be robust against speech recognition errors.

    A novel content based video query agent (VQA) for querying distributed video databases using a multimodal (image and sound) index was proposed. As the image search engine, a simple and variable dimension feature based matching method was adopted and an optimum representative frames (r-frames) selection technique was used for the automatic indexing method. Comparative experiments with the conventional region based image search engine using static image database and visualized sound database showed that the difference of the retrieval accuracy is small and the proposed feature based search engine is advantageous for VQA application. Results of video frame retrieval experiments showed that the proposed VQA is a promising query tool for distributed video databases on the network.

  • Indexing and retrieval scheme of the image database based on color and spatial relations

    We propose a new approach to retrieve images from an image database. We combine both color and spatial features of a picture to index and measure the similarity of images. We propose a new automatic indexing scheme of the image database according to our clustering method which could filter the image efficiently. As a technical contribution, a Seed-Filling like algorithm that could extract the shape and spatial relationship feature of the image is proposed. Also, the system is incorporated with a visual interface, which allows the user to specify objects as the spatial specification of pictures. With color identification and spatial similarity functions, the preliminary experience shows that the system is able to retrieve image information of a very high satisfaction.

  • Backward transliteration for Thai document retrieval

    Thai text retrieval systems always involve documents that use loan words (borrowed from foreign language), especially in the area of science and engineering. This paper describes an algorithmic approach to backward machine transliteration aimed at improving the retrieval process. The approach consists of two main steps: identifying loan words and back transliterating. The model of backward transliteration works successfully at approximately 95% including phonetic equivalent.

    We propose a new profile face detection system for automatic image annotation. For personal images, profile face detection is required because faces turn in different directions. To reduce the numerous false detections seen in previous approaches, we propose a block difference feature. The experiments we describe show the successful outcome of this strategy.
