    The ITER shear key system is designed to interconnect neighboring toroidal field coils at their inner portions. Due to these keys the coils inner portions resist the torque as a whole structure. On the other hand, the ITER magnet system design provides supporting of the centering load on the TFC by a bucking cylinder. Hence, the keys should not produce any significant wedging during the radial movement of the coils. Numerical modeling of the so called scissors' action keys that satisfy above requirements has been performed with assembly gaps being taking into account. Cooldown, TFC energizing and poloidal fields coils pulse regimes have been studied. Since the TFC torsion produces high cyclic compression on the key ground insulation, the electrical insulation testing is required. Two mock-up systems for this testing have been proposed and modeled. One system models an effect of the TFC radial movement resulting in higher peak compression on the insulation.

A collaboration with the Japanese institute RIKEN is providing financial support to carry out the program. After a successful R&D program to validate the design, the magnets are in the construction phase. The design of the magnets is reviewed, the construction approach is described, and test results from the first completed units are presented.

  • Mechanical considerations for uprate and rehabilitation of hydro-generators

    Electrical design procedures for the purpose of generator uprating are relatively straightforward calculations, based on the space available in the slot, desired insulation system, desired operating parameters and the magnitude of the uprating. More involved, and sometimes overlooked, are the mechanical design calculations to ensure that these machines are safe to operate at the higher levels. In a recent generator refurbishment and uprate by the author's company, large cracks were found in the spider arm to hub area. This machine would have failed mechanically at the higher rating. Its rotor cracks were extensively evaluated with root cause determination, and subsequently repaired. Before looking at this particular case history, a general overview of the mechanical calculations required for uprating are given.

  • AC Induction Motor Torsional Vibration Consideration - A Case Study

    Much has been written on the application of high-speed (3600 r/min) motors to pumps and compressors relative to vibration and lateral critical speeds. A reciprocating compressor coupled to an induction motor is a complex torsional system and can present a more complex set of problems to the equipment suppliers because of the wider range of forcing frequencies present. The problems encountered on a specific application with the objective of developing guidelines to be used to avoid similar system torsional problems on the application of induction motors to reciprocating equipment are discussed.

  • Modifications to the excitation characteristics of Fermilab Main Injector dipoles by machining

    Twelve dipole magnets were built under the R&D phase of the Fermilab Main Injector project using steel from a different vendor than the production vendor. These dipoles exhibited an excitation-dependent difference in strength relative to the production magnets, with a maximum difference of about 1% observed at high field. This difference was too large to allow them to be used in the project. From calculations based on the differences in the B(H) curves of the two types of steel, the high-field strength of the twelve R&D dipoles was reduced by machining the back-legs of the cores. The machining technique will be described, and excitation curves before and after machining will be compared.

  • Fracture Analysis of a Spindle in the X-Lift

    One of the two spindles in the X-lift broke suddenly during normal operation. The location of the breakage is where considerable stress concentration occurs and moreover the bending moment is at the maximum. Macrofractographic features associated with rotating-bending fatigue are evident on the fracture surface. The measured surface strain of the spindle varies cyclically as the spindle rotates and supports the rotating-bending fatigue. The X-lift is not perfectly symmetrical with respect to the horizontal plane. The unsymmetrical deformation can occur and cause the bending of the spindle. The 3-D finite element analysis of the X-lift revealed the bending of the spindle.

  • Conceptual design of the LHCD/LHH launcher for the Tokamak Physics Experiment

    The design of the lower hybrid launcher is configured to couple 1.5 MW of steady state lower hybrid heating/lower hybrid current drive (LHH/LHCD) power at 3.7 GHz to the Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) plasma. The launcher utilizes a unique laminated, water-cooled construction to achieve a compact array of 128 waveguides at the grille surface and includes real-time position control for plasma coupling. The design features of this launcher are described with details of the principal components and the possible upgrade of the launcher to 3 MW. Results of steady state thermal analysis of the launcher grille septa are included.
