This paper considers parallel machine scheduling with special jobs. Normal jobs can be processed on any of the parallel machines, while the special jobs can only be processed on one machine. The problem is analyzed for various manufacturing conditions and service requirements. The off-line scheduling problem is transformed into a classical parallel machine scheduling problem. The on-line scheduling uses the FCFS (first come, first served), SWSC (special window for special customers), and FFFS (first fit, first served) algorithms to satisfy the various requirements. Furthermore, this paper proves that FCFS has a competitive ratio of m, where m is the number of parallel machines, and this bound is asymptotically tight, SWSC has a competitive ratio of 2 and FFFS has a competitive ratio of 3–21 m, and these bounds are tight.

Balbina which has been a problem to develop, is due to start operating this year, six years behind schedule; it will create a largely stagnant lake the size of Tucurui's, but will have a capacity of only 250 MW. Economic, social, and environmental issues that surround further projects are examined. Brazil's hopes of easing economic strain by installing more efficient equipment, implementing better industrial processes, and promoting conservation are discussed.<<ETX>>
A method is presented by which a large electric utility can implement a load management program using its existing computer systems. It allows the data being stored and maintained on existing systems to be used by a new computer. Included in the discussion is the selection of the appropriate program and system. In so many combinatorial optimization problems, job shop scheduling problems have earned a reputation for being difficult to solve. GA has demonstrated considerable success in providing efficient solutions to many non-polynomial- hard optimization problems. In the field of job shop scheduling, GA has been intensively researched, and there are nine kinds of methods were proposed to encoding chromosome to represent a solution. In this paper, we proposed a novel genetic chromosome encoding approach, in this encoding method, the operation of crossover and mutation was done in three-dimensional coded space. 5 selected benchmark problems were tried with the proposed three- dimensional encoding GA for validation and the results are encouraging.
This paper proposes an improved Genetic Algorithm (IGA) - combined with ontology module to solve dynamic job shop scheduling problem (DJSSP). The objective function of this scheduling problem is to minimize a weighted sum method of maximum complete time (makespan) and mean waiting time to periodically plan production. This scheduling method is applied to a flexible manufacturing system. A reschedule strategy is utilized to solve dynamic disturbances happened during manufacturing process. Experimental results show that schedule can be repaired efficiently and correctly without obviously affecting the scheduling performance.
The more complex a development effort, the more difficult it is to reduce or control the project's schedule and cost. The use of concurrent engineering in the development cycle only exacerbates the problem by increasing the number of departments and people involved at any point in the development effort. Breakdowns in the process can have devastating effects on the project schedule and double or even triple the development cost. Here, the author describes how these project elements can be effectively controlled using proven project management techniques. A number of companies involved in complex development efforts have been able to greatly reduce both development time and cost by applying these techniques.
