  • Collisional cooling of negative ion beams

    Investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of using collisional cooling for reducing the energy spreads and, consequently, the emittances of negative-ion beams. We have designed a gas-filled RF-quadrupole ion cooler equipped with provisions for retarding energetic negative ion beams to energies below thresholds for electron detachment at injection and for reacceleration to high energies after the cooling process. The device has been used to cool O/sup -/ and F/sup -/ ion beams with initial energy spreads, /spl Delta/E >10 eV to final energy spreads, /spl Delta/E /spl sim/2 eV FWHM. Overall, transmission efficiencies of /spl sim/14% for F/sup -/ beams have been obtained. Experimental results show that electron detachment is the major loss mechanism for negative ions.

    A new mechanical gas-tight sampler has been designed to collect hydrothermal fluids at the seafloor. A key feature of the sampler is the novel sample valve which is pressure balanced under deep sea, and actuated by the ram on a submersible's manipulator. The sampler is designed to be deployed at the seafloor 3000 m underwater and can be used to sample hydrothermal fluid with temperature up to 400degC. Compressed gas is used to compensate for pressure reduction of sample fluids. Simulation of the flow system was conducted to estimate the fill rate. The sampler has been tested successfully in the first Sino-American Cooperative Deep Submergence Project from August 13 to September 3, 2005.

The results were of this cycle calculation were compared with basic Otto cycle values.

Work output occurs when gas flows from the hot gas reservoir to the cold gas via a free-piston engine whose cycle is essentially a diesel cycle.

  • Research on expansion ratio of air power engine system

    To increase the energy utilization rate of compressed air, the expansion ration is optimized based on single-staged compressed air power system by building mathematical method with the basic thermodynamic theory. Two-staged compressed air power system mathematical model is built on the basis of research on single-staged compressed air power system. Exergy analysis on air power system is researched on different expansion ratio in 10 MPa pressure and 300K temperature as input condition. Research results indicate two-staged compressed air power system expander is better than single-stage system. Results also show that the first stage expansion ratio is larger impact than the second expansion in two-staged expansion work. The work is foundation for designing valve train system for compressed air powered system.

  • Trends of Stratospheric Aerosol and Ozone over Tibetan Plateau

    The aerosol and ozone mixing ratio data of HALOE is used to analysis the distribution and trends of the aerosol and ozone over the Plateau is analyzed and their relationship is discussed further. There is clear gap in the aerosol and ozone vertical profiles. Below the 50 hPa level the difference of the aerosol in different seasons is clear and the aerosol mixing ratio in winter and spring is more than that in summer and autumn. Between 20 hPa and 5 hPa, the ozone mixing ratio is highest in summer and lowest in winter. The ozone over the Plateau is less than that of ECHN in spring and summer from 100 hPa to 10 hPa so that these results in the ozone valley from May to July. In the low stratosphere from 100 hPa to 60 hPa and the upper stratosphere above 30 hPa, aerosol and ozone mixing ratio both have a good positive correlation over the Tibetan Plateau.
