  • Inventory Management in Assemble-to-Order System with Two Correlated Products

A single period assemble-to-order system consisting of a manufacturer and three suppliers was considered. The manufacturer produces two different types of correlated end products, each product needs a different mix of a common set of component parts, which belong to two types, one type is specific components and the other is common components. How to manage inventories of components in such a system is of managerial interest. The inventory management problem for the system was formulated as a two-stage stochastic nonlinear integer program. The decomposition of total expected profit function was proved and two algorithms were given. We solve the first stage of the problem to determine the optimal stock levels of the components by algorithm 2 and solve the second stage problem by algorithm 1, where the component allocation decisions are made. At last, a numerical example is given

Exception handling in workflow management systems (WFMSs) is a very important problem since it is not possible to specify all possible outcomes and alternatives. To ensure a high service quality in such Procurement and Inventory Management System based on workflow, exception-handling schemes for conflict resolution are needed. Agent's auto-learning is applied to solve unexpected exception and enhance capability.

  • SMILE - distributed middleware for event stream processing

In this paper, we describe the SMILE (Smart Middleware, Light Ends) system which is one of the earliest systems built in the area of distributed event stream processing. SMILE unites the '"publish-subscribe" model of messaging middleware with the "continuous query" model of database systems. In SMILE, information producers, which may be sensors, applications, or databases, generate streams of events, such as RFID data, news items or stock trades; consumers specify stateful subscriptions to derived views, such as "individuals trading top 5 total volume of stock Y within x minutes before a major news story about the same company Y"; the SMILE system constructs and deploys a dataflow network of computations which process events from producers, compute derived views and deliver continuous and timely updates of subscribed views to consumers. Research challenges addressed by SMILE include: rigorously defining the semantics for correct state delivery; implementing this semantics in the presence of failure; distributing computations optimally over a network of multiple servers; scheduling and controlling message flow in this network; smoothly integrating this technology with other components, e.g., databases, services, user interfaces. SMILE is applicable to any "sense and respond" scenario that requires monitoring and processing of events as they are generated. Applications span multiple industries, e.g., monitoring financial opportunities and detecting potential fraud in financial industry, systems management and alerts in data centers, inventory management in RFID applications, and business performance management. In this paper, we describe the SMILE system, its architecture, services supported, and implementation details, and its use in multiple application scenarios.

  • A hybrid optimization model for hotel yield management

Nowadays yield management is a strategic and tactical tool for hotels to improving its revenues and profitability under the global competitive environment. Compared to the airline industry, hotel yield management has some unique characteristics. A central reservation system is urgently needed to be built up for a hotel to use yield management in China. In this paper, we use the Holt-Winters process to forecast room demands in the future periods. Then we build a hybrid optimization model for hotel yield management, and a branch- and-bound method mixed with greedy algorithm is developed to solve the problem.

  • A novel inventory classification approach based on fuzzy membership degrees of evaluation indexes

A novel inventory classification approach based on fuzzy membership degrees of evaluation indexes is proposed in this paper. The approach includes six steps: the selection of the evaluation indexes, the formulation of the fuzzy membership functions of evaluation indexes, the calculation of the fuzzy membership degrees of evaluation indexes, the sequencing of the fuzzy membership degrees of evaluation indexes, the selection of inventory types and the inventory classification results. Using the inventory data of a company, the proposed inventory classification approach is applied. The application results are analyzed and the feasibility of the approach is demonstrated. The presented approach can help the enterprises improve their inventory management level and reduce their inventory costs.
