Judging by the cover: Most job interviewers make quick judgments about an applicant, based on appearance; judgments that can affect an entire interview and get you the job

IEEE Potentials, 1985

Initially, you are what you wear, at least in the opinion of most people. In a few sweeping glances, assessments are made about your character, intelligence, and ability to succeed based on appearance. People will revise their opinion for better or worse as they get to know you at work. (Years may pass before some “higher-ups” get the chance. Future ...

  • Preface

Howard Hiatt had been a wonderful mentor and friend for almost forty years when we first discussed writing a book together. When we first started to talk about it, in October 2010, Howard asked me to remind him how we first got together. I emailed him back that “I think I first started to hear about you during our second year of medical school, when I was working on some of the anti-war protests and on trying to get a neighborhood voice into the discussion about building the ‘new' Affiliated Hospitals complex in Mission Hill. I think it was when Harvey and I were living together on Mission Hill that we invited you and Doris for dinner. We decided to invite the faculty member we would most like to know. A few years later you made it possible for me to do the Patients book and gave me a position at HSPH when Jill and I moved back from Atlanta to Boston in 1976. And then many things and many people drew us closer.

  • The lost picture show

When the renowned cinematogr apher Emmanuel Lubezki began planning to shoot the wilderness drama The Revenant, he decided that to capture the stark, frozen beauty of a Canadian winter, he would use no artificial light, instead relying on sunlight, moonlight, and fire. He also planned to use traditional film cameras for most of the shooting, reserving digital cameras for low-light scenes. He quickly realized, though, that film "didn't have the sensitivity to capture the scenes we were trying to shoot, especially the things we shot at dawn and dusk," as he told an interviewer.

  • How Students Prepare in Flipped Classrooms: A Case Study in a Physiology Class

The purpose of this study is to give suggestions on how faculty should design flipped classrooms. We conducted questionnaire and student interviews to clarify how students prepared for a physiology class at Kyoto University. The results of the questionnaire suggest that while there was a positive correlation between the preparation times and grades, some students' preparation was unproductive or inefficient. Therefore, we conducted interviews with five students to clarify the obstacles for achieving an efficient preparation. Interviews showed that one student didn't prepare at all, while the other four spent too much time on preparation without all of them achieving a high score. Not everyone recognized the significance of preparation. Additionally, four students deployed two note-taking styles - they either copied almost every word from the slides or summarized the important points from the slides. On the other hand, a student with no preparation was able to achieve average grades merely by reviewing the learning contents after the class. We found that students didn't know how to prepare appropriately for a flipped classroom, therefore it is important for instructors to specify clearly what areas students should focus on and how to efficiently take notes during their preparation.

  • The research of the building of competency model system in high-speed railway based on fuzzy analytic hierarchy process

According to “The long-term development plan of China”, to meet the rapidly growing of passengers, China will built the fast passage between big cities and capital cities, including four vertical and four horizontal rail lines and four systems of intercity high speed rail. And also will complete construction of more than 12,000 kilometers of passenger line. With the development of high-speed railway. A large number of high-quality talents are badly needed. In order to point out the professional quality of staffs in the high speed railway system scientifically and quantitatively, this paper describes the procedures and methods of constructing competence assessment system with competency model and the fuzzy AHP method, mainly including the way to determine the job responsibilities, to give job competency evaluation, to calculation weight and how to apply the results.
