Minitrack on IT and Project Management

2007 40th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS'07), 2007

Project-based working forms a major component of information technology (IT) activity in most companies, especially in relation to the design and implementation of new IT systems. Yet evidence suggests that many IT projects do not meet cost, schedule and functionality targets. This has significant negative implications for individual companies and for national economies. For example, Johnson [1}estimated that $81 billion ...

Simulation training for innovation champions

PICMET '99: Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology. Proceedings Vol-1: Book of Summaries (IEEE Cat. No.99CH36310), 1999

Summary form only given as follows. Encouraging innovative practice in mature, stable, change resisting organizations is a topic of interest. Champions are especially important in mature organizations because routines are well established and there is considerable resistance to innovation due to its routine-disrupting nature. The simulation described here provides training in the champion role.

Yet evidence suggests that many IT projects do not meet cost, schedule and functionality targets. This has significant negative implications for individual companies and for national economies. For example, Johnson [1}estimated that $81 billion was spent in the USA on IT projects that were abandoned before they were completed. Moreover, IT tools and techniques are seen to be central to the management of projects of all types across the diverse range of industrial sectors.

  • Determinants of Information System Innovation Behavior in Enterprises: An Empirical Investigation

Information system innovation has become a hot issue because increasing enterprises have to depend on the innovation behaviors to get the better performance from information systems. The objective of this paper is to deeply understand information system innovation behaviors by examining organizational innovation climate factors. The paper proposes two patterns of information system innovation behaviors based on the exploitation & exploration innovation theories from organizational management literature. Then with the deep interviews from some enterprises in Chinese, it builds four dimensions of IT innovation climate. Next the paper develops a research model to link four dimensions with two patterns of information system innovation behaviors. To test this model and proposed hypotheses, it collects the questionnaire from 192 enterprises. Data results support the research model and most hypotheses with structural equation model (SEM) and other statistics software. Finally test results are discussed and implications are given.

  • Innovation in Romanian SMEs and Its Impact on Performance

Romania, a New Member state of European Union, has undertaken a complex process to adapt to new conditions and requirements of European market, especially the growing competition of foreign products and services once the commercial barriers had fallen. Romanian SMEs are the one of the most affected area. In order to create a general perspective on small and medium enterprises in Romania, apprehension of the innovative activities developed within these institutions has an essential role. The undertaken research revealed that innovative efforts within SMEs were especially focused on new products, new technologies, new managerial and marketing approaches, renewing the informational system and human resources training.

  • Strategy 2.0 to a Teaching and Learning Process in Higher Education

Organizations need a "strategy 2.0" that takes advantages and prevents risks of using Web 2.0 tools. In higher education organizations these tools have been used in logistic processes rather than in training processes. The use of these tools in training processes can contribute to pedagogical innovation and to develop students' learning and professional skills This paper presents a case study, aiming to validate the strategy 2.0 used in Information System Management classes of Management Course, in ESTG, as well as the skills developed in students during the referred teaching and learning process. This validation will be a contribution to the design of appropriate guidelines to the definition of a strategy 2.0 for higher education institutions.

  • Notice of Retraction
Based on “case teaching and case competition” in the initiative administered specialty practice teaching reform

It's the key point to inspire the initiative of university students during educating the innovation ability. What is called “Initiative Practice” is relative to “Passive Practice”, refers to let the students themselves truly participate in social practice as far as possible. The author takes the practice theory as guiding theory, takes the educational reform of Economic Major Students as breakthrough point, making full use of the race of Case Study and The Case Competition's advantages, establishes the education atmosphere to guide the student participating on themselves which to found a training pattern base on students themselves and their enthusiasm.
