Piezoelectric ceramics by powder injection molding

Lead zirconate titanate (PbZrTiO3) and barium titanate (BaTiO3) samples were fabricated using ceramic powder injection molding method (CIM). Piezoelectric CIM samples were characterized and it is shown that obtained properties are satisfactory and comparable to those found in literature. This shows that it is feasibile to synthesise piezoelectric ceramics with good dielectric and piezoelectric properties using CIM method.

    The nano-sized Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (Nano YSZ) powder with an average particles size of 50nm is initially heat treated and then mixed with wax-based binder system. The prepared feedstock is then formed into a shape by powder injection moulding process. The green parts are then thermally debound and sintered. The sintering behavior of the nano-sized particles is presented and compared with those of BASF feedstock. It is found that Nano YSZ can achieve 98% of its theoretical density. Homogenous microstructure is obtained with an average grain size of 500nm. The hardness value of the sintered Nano YSZ is similar to those obtained from BASF feedstock.

Efficient performance is verified by a number of demonstrative experiments on an industrial injection molding machine.

A 3D metal printing technique was employed in the current study to make the mold core. The current study, combining the results from the CAE simulation and the real experiment, aimed to compare the cooling efficiency between baffles cooling and conformal cooling. It has demonstrated that conformal cooling has higher cooling efficiency. Residual stresses were measured by the photoelasticity instrument, the results revealed that conformal cooling residual stresses was lower than baffles cooling. In terms of cooling time, conformal cooling required 24 seconds, which 19.7% less than the baffles cooling one of 30 seconds.

  • A SNCCDBAGG-Based NN Ensemble Approach for Quality Prediction in Injection Molding Process

    This paper presents a SNCCDBAGG-based neural network (NN) ensemble approach for quality prediction in injection molding process. Bagging is used to create NNs for the ensemble by independently training these NNs on different training sets. Negative correlation learning via correlation-corrected data (NCCD) is used to achieve negative correlation of each network's error against errors for the rest of the ensemble by training transformed target data for NN in the ensemble as the desired network output for some epochs. A selection-based strategy is proposed to improve generalization ability when combining Bagging and NCCD. Experimental results show its good performance on quality predicting in injection molding process compared with single NN predictor and NCCD predictor.

  • Miniaturization of plastic lens by injection molding for disposable endoscopie optical coherence tomography system

    Minimally invasive robotic surgery required disposable endoscopie optical coherence tomography (OCT) for high-resolution deep tissue imaging and cross- contamination prevention. Here, we developed a miniaturized plastic lens by injection molding for developing a disposable endoscopie optical coherence tomography system for the first time. Injection molding provided low-cost and high-production rate to produce a disposable plastic lens and enabled the miniaturization of plastic lens. Transmittance and curvature of the plastic lens was measured. The plastic lens was integrated with an endoscopie OCT system, and the images of human-skin and microspheres embedded in agarose gel were captured. We are currently trying to integrate the plastic lens with a disposable endoscopie OCT system.

  • DC electrical reliability of joints in submarine telecommunication cables

    This analysis has shown that production mouldings have an inherent high reliability under service conditions. Due to the fact that the majority of the system mouldings are operated well below 10kV, and that a 'worse-case' approach is adopted for the analysis, reliability should in actuality be substantially greater. It has been shown quantitatively that routine monitoring of data from the test procedure outlined in this paper will rapidly identify any change in moulding quality, and eliminate any mouldings that could potentially place a system at risk. Time dependence in the DC breakdown of joint mouldings has been shown to be dominated by processes in the bulk material.

  • Fabrication of tetrapod-shaped Al/Ni microparticles with tunable self-propagating exothermic function

    This paper reports micron-sized tetrapod shape Al/Ni particles fabricated by injection molding and electroless plating. We realize fabricating the 3D tetrapod micro particles with self-propagating exothermic function that is able to tunable by changing Al powder's diameter and simultaneously by keeping porous Al tetrapod's void fraction constant. The maximum surface temperature and high temperature duration during the reaction differ from sputtered Al/Ni multilayer film's exothermic performances. The tetrapod's exothermic performances can be freely controlled in response to the applications.

  • Neural network for prediction of composite mechanical properties based on niche genetic algorithm

    This paper proposes to apply the artificial neural network theory and the genetic algorithm to solve the difficulties of predicting composite mechanical properties. Niche technique based on crowding mechanism is used in genetic algorithm, and punishing function is adopted to adjust individual fitness, so as to promote global search capability. Taking the wheat straw-reinforced composite for instance, four influence factors (mold temperature, mold pressure, fibre content and time) are selected to test its tensile strength and toughness. The simulation results show the founded network model has preferable learning and generalization capabilities, which performs effectively in predicting mechanical properties. Besides, the model is used to optimize process parameters of injection molding and find the range of best parameters.
