Pollution monitoring in China in the last fifteen years are briefly reviewed. From 1972, three monitoring programs have been carried out so far. The first is so called pre-investigation; the second is baseline investigation; the third is regular monitoring. They play important roles in making progress in our understanding of pollution conditions in China Seas, designing national environment projects and making decisions for national contructions. Three gaps of knowledge seem especially striking. With the growth of population and the development of industry and agriculture, Environmental problem has prompted global concerns. Since 1970, our Government has shown great concern for environmental pollution. In early 1970s under pre-Premier Zhou's advocating, we took the first step on environmental protection. One of the basic works is environmental pollution monitoring.

The objective of the research was to explore the impact of air pollution on the health of human respiratory system. The method of the study was to collect data of Air Pollution Index (API), meteorology and the hospitalization of respiratory from 2004 to 2007 in urban of Lanzhou,China. The impact of the air pollution on the health of respiratory was investigated Generalized Additive Poisson models after controlling long-term time trend, week and meteorology, and stratified by gender, age and respiratory disease type. The result of the study is that every one of IQR (48 units) rising in daily API, there was a 5.50 (95%CI: 4.03%, 6.99%) increase in respiratory hospitalizations, and this influence was delayed effects.Males are more susceptible than females to air pollution and air pollution is more likely to affect under 15-years-old and over 65-years-old. As well as the delayed effects of API rising to pneumonia patients is higher than upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). The conclusion of the study is that air pollution considerably affects urban residents' respiratory morbidity, and gender, age and respiratory disease type had different effects.
Dramatically - increasing and high concentrate air pollution of Ulaanbaatar city is a top issue that requires urgent and efficient solution. Master plan for reduction of air pollution is a strategy of Ulaanbaatar municipality towards achieve better air quality by saving energy, implementing clean technology, improving legislation, policy documents and management at all levels of governance, developing public and private partnership, and building capacity of residents. This paper introduces content of master plan, concepts followed and methodologies used for its development, and some outputs of the study. The plan is result of collaborative work of central and local government officials, researchers, professionals, engineers, and community and business representatives.
The sedimentary environment's change will be recorded in the sediments, which can be manifested by the variation of the sediments' physicochemical features. To study the trophic evolution and heavy metals pollution processes, the sedimentary geochemical properties of the core Huoshaohei (HSH) sediments, such as grain size, nutrients, heavy metals, etc, are analyzed. The nutrients in the sediments depended mainly on the lake internal circulation and the heavy metals were from natural geogenic sources before the 1940s, which were not influenced by human activities generally. And grain size was one of the key factors influencing heavy metals content in the sediments. The results indicate that the influence of human activities to HSH is little. And the grain size has become finer from 1960s, while the contents of TP, TOC and C/N ratio increase obviously after 1960s, indicating the eutrophication state of HSH Lake in this period. Meanwhile the increasing of heavy metals content, such as Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr and Sr, and their proportion of valid fractions in the sediments prove that they all result from human pollutants since the late 1960s.
The Cd concentration in 28 vegetables and soil environment of Urumqi outskirts were analyzed. By comparing with Cd accumulation coefficient of the vegetables, it was found that <i>Allium</i> <i>sativum</i> L. has the strongest ability of accumulating Cd. Based on this, <i>Allium</i> <i>sativum</i> L. was taken as the experiment material. The Cd accumulation characteristics of Allium sativum L. was primarily determined by a test with different settings of Cd concentration gradient simulated in pots. The results show that the accumulation coefficient of Cd is evidently higher than those of other vegetables. When the Cd concentration is 50 mg/kg in the alkaline soil, the Cd content in the aboveground part of the <i>Allium</i> <i>sativum</i> L. reaches 15 mg/kg, and the underground part is 48.7 mg/kg. It indicates that <i>Allium</i> <i>sativum</i> L. has a stronger ability in restoring Cd contaminated soil.
Mathematical models for prediction of air pollutant levels, produced by industrial plants, have been taken into account. A black box approach, for modeling air pollution is proposed. The main target of the models is the prediction, on the basis of both the meteorological forecasting and the production policy, of pollutant levels, in particular sulfur dioxide has been considered. The integration of this model in an emission control scheme may represent a very useful approach to the air quality problem.
We design and develop the Fingerprint pollution source identification system of accidental water pollution emergency. It's built on MapInfo platform, and developed by MapBasic language. By comparing the water quality test result of the accidental water pollution emergency with the "fingerprint" characteristics database, the system identifies specific sources of pollutants and provides appropriate prevention and response measures to make sure that the accidental water pollution emergency management can be taken more perfect, targeted, reasonable and scientific.
