  • An expert system for fault diagnosis in transformers during impulse tests

    The objective of this paper is to present an expert system for fault diagnosis in transformers during impulse tests. Transformers are impulse-tested by applying a specific set of test impulse sequences and the resulting voltage and current oscillograms are recorded. The presence of any fault in the transformer winding is detected using these recorded oscillograms. These complex decision tasks are, in general, performed by experienced testing personnel, whose knowledge can be expressed as a set of production rules. The knowledge base of the expert system includes as many as possible of these production rules. To identify, characterize and locate a fault, an inference engine is developed to perform deductive reasoning based on the rules in the knowledge base and the statistical techniques. The basic idea of the expert system is to make a fault diagnosis in a user-friendly windowed environment. The modularity of the system enables easy expansion and modification of the database, the rule-base as well as the inference engine.

  • Test research on overvoltage withstanding characteristics of control cables

    Withstanding characteristics of control cables under 50 Hz AC, DC and lightning impulse overvoltage are tested and studied, and the results show that surface discharge voltage of cable terminal tends to saturate with the increase of the pole distance; the fact that head and shield of its are treated well or not has a great effect on the withstanding characteristic of control cables; the insulating property between shield and core wires is the most unsubstantial link in the whole insulation of control cables, which can withstand more than 18 kV 50 Hz AC voltage, 45 kV positive polarity DC voltage and 40 kV negative polarity lightning impulse voltage within 30 seconds.

  • Polyurethane foam application for high voltage insulation

    In recent years, the improvement in optical technology has increased the use of optical instrument transformers (OIT). The active parts of many OITs are placed in SF/sub 6/ or N/sub 2/ filled insulating structures. The challenge with using these insulating gases initiated the replacement of them with polyurethane foam, which is frequently used in low-voltage switchgear. The insulation of an OIT was modeled by foam filled tubes: 61.0 cm (24") long, 20.3 cm (8") diameter and electrode gap 15.2 cm (6"), and electrode radius 1.27 cm (0.5"). The AC and lightning impulse breakdown voltages of these samples were determined by a large number of tests. The repeated lightning impulse test was conducted by using 600 impulses with a peak voltage of 120 kV. The partial discharge measurements were also investigated.

  • An Impulse Generator-Electronic Switch for Visual Testing of Wide-Band Networks

    The impulse generator-electronic switch is an instrument developed primarily to facilitate the design and production of radar networks such as delay, pulse-forming, and sweep networks. The instrument may be used to test any network that can be arranged to store a dc charge. Discharge characteristics of microsecond order, produced by a reference network and the network under test, are simultaneously displayed in pictorial form for comparative measurements. The first part of the paper describes representative applications and, with the aid of cathode-ray-oscilloscope traces, illustrates the simplicity of performance; the second part describes the circuit functions in detail.
