  • A new scheme for designing IIR filters with finite wordlength coefficients

    A scheme for designing IIR digital filters, with specified coefficient wordlengths based on successive digitization and reoptimization, is presented and compared to related approaches via a number of design examples. The ordered digitization of the coefficients based on their sensitivity, with each digitization followed by reoptimization of the remaining coefficients, results in a much reduced computation effort in comparison to related design approaches.

  • Design and application of wide-range variable fractional delay filter

    In this paper, the design and application of wide-range variable fractional delay (WVFD) is presented. First, the design of WVFD filter is studied including Lagrange method and least square (LS) method. Then, the designed WVFD filter is used to develop an adaptive sub-sample time delay estimation algorithm in which the filter coefficients are updated by using the least mean p-power (LMP) error algorithm. Finally, simulation examples are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed design and estimation method.

  • Design and implementation of approximately linear phase two-dimensional IIR filters

    A new method for designing separable denominator two-dimensional (2-D) infinite-response response (IIR) digital filters with approximately linear phase in the passband is proposed. This method is based on the model reduction of a linear phase finite-impulse response (FIR) filter using 2-D impulse response Gramians. The implementation of these filters using fixed-point arithmetic is also considered and an algorithm for obtaining a low roundoff noise structure with high computational efficiency is presented. Furthermore, a lower bound for the number of bits required for a 2-D IIR filter implementation with free of overflow oscillations is given. The resulting 2-D IIR digital filter has four advantages: (1) approximately linear phase in the passband; (2) low global roundoff noise; (3) high computational efficiency; and (4) no overflow oscillations under various overflow nonlinearities.
