  • Virtual-reality based visualization of cardiac arrhythmias on mobile devices

    Computer simulations and imaging of human physiology and anatomy are effectively used for diagnostics and medical treatments and are thus a focus of scientific research. Suitable representation of data is a critical aspect to achieve best results. Therefore, we developed an interactive visualization scheme especially for the representation of cardiac arrhythmias based on a conventional mobile device and virtual reality (VR) goggles (Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR) in combination with a game engine. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness for this new technique, evaluate its potential and propose a general workflow for such a visualization environment. The use of a conventional mobile device in combination with VR goggles creates a portable and low-cost system, equipped with enough processing power and pixel density for many types of applications. The user can interact with the data through head movement or a secondary controller As current game engines support a wide range of additional input methods and controllers, the interaction method can be customized to fit the target audience. To evaluate this method, we conducted a survey with eight typical phenomena from the field of cardiac arrhythmias. The participants were asked to rate different performance aspects on a scale from one (very bad) to five (very good). All participants (N=27) rated the performance as fluent (median=5). Furthermore, most participants (70%) ranked the overall impression as very good (median=5). On the long run, the system can be used for education and presentations as well as improved planning and guidance of medical procedures.

In a full VR implementation, the user wears specialized goggles that substitute small video displays for the lenses, one for each eye. The displays become the "lenses" onto a simulated world. The head-mounted display containing the goggles detects head movement and updates the user's view accordingly; the user has the impression of looking around, even moving within, the simulated environment. The sensory experience can be further enriched with sound, or a data glove to simulate contact between the user and simulated objects. In a partial VR implementation, a computer's video display becomes a window onto the simulated environment, and no external gear is required. In a networked environment, people can be immersed in the same simulation, each perceiving it from their own point of view.<<ETX>>

  • Design of CMOS LED driver and optical receiver for 650-nm POF applications

    In this paper, LED driver and optical receiver for 650-nm plastic optical fiber (POF) applications are designed and implemented using 0.5-mum CMOS technology. In LED driver, modulation current has to be arranged in 3 to 4-mA to meet eye protection regulations in visible red wavelength (650-nm). To apply for low cost POF applications, simple and low cost LED driver is proposed. LED driver is designed to operate at 50-Mb/s bit rates and consumes only 6-mA DC currents including modulation current of 3.5-mA. In the receiver side, two methods of auto-threshold control technique will be introduced and compared. The designed optical receiver achieves transimpedance gain of 145-dBOmega, 50-Mb/s operations with 45-MHz bandwidth for 4-pF photodiode parasitic capacitance. And proposed optical receiver guarantees digital level output swing against the range of incident photo current from 200-nA to 25-uA and the range of operating frequency from DC to 50-Mb/s. Receiver chipset consumes only 10-mW from a 3.3-V single supply.

  • Towards real-time hardware gamma correction for dynamic contrast enhancement

    Making the transition between digital video imagery acquired by a focal plane array and imagery useful to a human operator is not a simple process. The focal plane array ?sees? the world in a fundamentally different way than the human eye. Gamma correction has been historically used to help bridge the gap. The gamma correction process is a non-linear mapping of intensity from input to output where the parameter gamma can be adjusted to improve the imagery's visual appeal. In analog video systems, gamma correction is performed with analog circuitry and is adjusted manually. With a digital video stream, gamma correction can be provided using mathematical operations in a digital circuit. In addition to manual control, gamma correction can also be automatically adjusted to compensate for changes in the scene. We are interested in applying automatic gamma correction in systems such as night vision goggles where both low latency and power efficiency are important design parameters. We present our results in developing an automatic gamma correction algorithm to meet these requirements. The algorithm is comprised of two parts, determination of the desired value for gamma and the application of the correction. The calculation of the gamma value update is performed based upon statistical metrics of the imagery's intensity. HDL code implementing the measurement of the statistical metrics has been developed and tested in hardware. Both the computation of a gamma update and the application of the gamma correction were simplified to basic arithmetic operations and two specialized functions, logarithm and exponentiation of a constant base by a variable exponent. We present approximation methods for both specialized functions simplifying their implementation into basic arithmetic operations. The hardware implementations of the approximations allow the above requirements to be met. We evaluate the accuracy of the approximations as compared to full resolution double-precision floating point mathematical operations. We present the final results for visual judging to evaluate the impact of the approximations.

    An eye movement analyzer was developed for analyzing eye movements and superimposing the observer's line of sight on a TV image corresponding to his or her view. The eye-movement detection unit is compact in size and weighs only 1.2 kg. Eye-movement data are multiplexed onto the vertical blanking interval of the field-of-view video signal and transmitted on UHF. The processing system which is used to analyze the eye movements and processes the TV image is also compact and easy to carry. Calibration is automatic and completed within 1 min with a high degree of accuracy.<<ETX>>
