By conducting numerical simulation, the impact of the SOA and input data critical parameters on the Q-factor is thoroughly investigated and assessed enabling to extract useful design rules for their proper selection so as to optimize this performance metric and ensure error- free operation.

Error-free operation with only 1-dB penalty is realized at 40 Gb/s with the input signal polarization scrambled. The demonstrated scheme also offers a novel function of restoring the degree-of-polarization of the signal light.

  • A 35-to-46-Gb/s Ultra-Low Jitter Clock and Data Recovery Circuit for Optical Fiber Transmission Systems

    We demonstrated an ultra-low jitter clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit that covers an ultra wide frequency range from 35 Gb/s to 46 Gb/s. Our CDR has a newly developed dual input LC-VCO with a fine/coarse tuning scheme and a dual- loop architecture, which consists of a phase tracking loop and a frequency tracking loop. The CDR chip, which was made using an InP-HBT process, shows an extremely clear eye opening with an ultra-low jitter (&lt; 9 mUI-rms) and an error-free operation (&lt;1times10<sup>-12</sup>) throughout a wide range of 35 to 46 Gb/s at a 2<sup>31</sup>-1 PRBS signal. The RMS and peak-to-peak jitter of the recovered clock were 226 fs and 1.56 ps, respectively. We suppressed output jitter to half of that found in previous work. In addition, a stable bit error rate (BER) that is insensitive to PRBS word length was demonstrated during an optical transmission test. These results show that our full-rate CDR is a very promising chip for 40-Gb/s-class optical transmission systems with the multi data rates.

  • Scalable Optical Packet Switches for Multiple Data Formats and Data Rates Packets

    We demonstrate an optical packet switch (OPS) subsystem employing in-band labeling to allow for transparent routing of packets with multiple data formats and data bit rates. Packets employing in-band labels can be processed without the need to reconfigure the label processor and the switch when changing data format and bit-rate. The label processor is based on asynchronous optical signal processing in combination with a simple electronic combinatory network. This makes the label processor capable to process a large number of labels with low latency time (<3 ns) without complicated and power- hungry high-speed packet clock recovery and serializer/deserializer circuits. Experimental results show error-free operation of 1 × 64 OPS subsystem for 160-Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying and 120-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying multiwavelength packets.

  • A monolithically integrated logic photoreceiver with double-heterojunction bipolar transistors

    A simplified logic photoreceiver with a photodetector directly connected to a decision circuit has been monolithically integrated with double-heterojunction bipolar transistors. Neither a preamplifier nor compensation circuits was used in this photoreceiver. A power estimation model was introduced to the simplified photoreceiver. Important device characteristics for error-free operation under practical conditions were quantitatively discussed. A 10-Gbit/s error free operation for a 1.55-/spl mu/m wavelength was successfully achieved.

  • Byte-Level Parametric Wavelength Exchange for Narrow Pulsewidth Return-to-Zero Signal

    We investigate the feasibility of switching return-to-zero signals with 3-ps pulsewidth by byte-level parametric wavelength exchange (PWE) numerically and experimentally. Square-wave modulated pumps are used in PWE for pump gating. Simultaneous bit swapping for two signals at the same time slot is achieved. Error-free operation is achieved for both signal channels with ap3.5-dB power penalty at 10<sup>-9</sup> bit-error rate.

  • Variable Slowlight Buffers in All-Optical Packet Switching Routers

    We investigated variable slowlight buffers consisting of 8 and 32 tunable- coupled-resonator-rings. Experiments showed error-free operations exhibiting variable delays of 0~2 ns at 1.25 Gb/s for 8-ring and 0-350 ps at 10 Gb/s for 32-ring structures.

  • All-Optical Comparator Based on Cross Gain Modulation in Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers

    An all-optical scheme for comparison of N-bit long Boolean numbers is presented. The scheme, wavelength independent, exploits six SO As. Error-free operations and extinction ratio degradation lower than 1.9 dB are obtained for each output signal.
