The Stirling engine was developed by Isshiki et al in order to convert solar heat energy into electric power. For driving this Stirling engine, the cylinder head was directly heated by the sun rays converged by this optical system, and the temperature of the cylinder increased up to 700 /spl deg/C. Finally, the engine produced an output power of about 1kW.

  • Iterative Learning Control for Switched Reluctance Motor Direct-drive Electro-Hydraulic Position Servo System

    Aiming at the serious saturation and dead zone nonlinearity, time-variability and time lag existing in pump-controlled cylinder electro-hydraulic servo system droved by SRM (Switched Reluctance Motor) directly, the ILC (iterative learning control) method was put forward to conduct the position servo control for hydraulic machine slider in this thesis. The mathematical model of SRM direct-drive electro-hydraulic servo system was founded. The control algorithms of open loop and closed loop ILC were designed according to the principle of ILC. The convergence characteristics and shift curve tracking abilities were researched by simulations and experiments. The results show that the convergence speed and accuracy of closed loop ILC exceed open loop by a big margin, and the ILC can effectively eliminate the influences of dead zone and time lag nonlinearity, and the closed loop ILC method can raise control accuracy of pump-controlled cylinder system remarkably compared with PID control.

  • Tubular linear induction motor for hydraulic capsule pipeline. I. Finite element analysis

    An axisymmetric model of the magnetic field of the tubular linear induction motor (TLIM) for application to hydraulic capsule pipelines is developed using finite element method (FEM) analysis. The FEM model is used to analyze a specific TLIM design at standstill for a given supply current. The finite element formulation of the field equations is discussed and the magnetic field contours at different instants of time are presented. FEM computation of the thrust compares very well with experimental data.<<ETX>>

  • Microwave imaging of multiple conducting cylinders using local shape functions

    A novel technique is presented for microwave imaging of multiple conducting cylinders using local shape functions. In this method, a scattering volume is divided into small sub-scattering regions and assigned a local shape function amplitude. The reconstructed image is represented by the set of local shape functions that satisfy multiple scattering boundary conditions. Monochromatic image reconstructions have a resolution scale of 0.1 lambda for single scatterers; multiple scatterers can be resolved at a separation of 0.42 lambda .<<ETX>>

  • Optimizing strategy for MR imaging gradient coils

    An optimization technique for magnetic resonance imaging gradient coils is presented. Assuming the coil in the form of four windings, each having a spiral polygon shape, the coordinates of nodes are varied to optimize the coil performance. The hybrid simulated annealing - Powell technique is used as the numerical tool. Results of calculations for differently formulated goal functions are demonstrated.<<ETX>>

  • Computation of Green's functions for a surface field on a circular cylinder with an impedance boundary condition

    Computation of the exact eigenfunction solution for the surface fields due to a point source on a circular cylinder is usually a very challenging and time consuming task, especially when the radius of the circular cylinder or the geodesic path length between the source and field points is electrically large. An efficient technique is developed for the computation of the exact Green's function pertaining to the surface magnetic field due to a magnetic current on a circular cylinder with an impedance boundary condition (IBC). The results obtained by this technique can be used for the validation and checking of the accuracy of the relevant mutual coupling as well as surface field results obtained by conventional high frequency asymptotic techniques.
