More and more businesses are becoming highly dependent on their information systems (IS) to operate and manage themselves. This necessitates a formal methodology to express business concepts, business processes and events that both business managers and IS professionals can understand and communicate with. The result of this understanding can be quick correction of business systems and operations that are more efficient. This paper introduces the concepts and uses of business objects and outlines the Object Oriented Business Engineering, as first proposed by Open Engineering Inc. for modeling and designing business objects.
The United States Army has identified the need for lightweight power sources to provide the individual soldier with continuous power for extended periods without resupply. Due to the high cost of primary batteries and the high weight of rechargeable batteries, fuel cell technology is being developed to provide a power source for the individual soldier, sensors, communications equipment and other various applications in the Army. Current programs are in the tech base area and will demonstrate proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power sources with low weight and high energy densities. Fuel cell power sources underwent user evaluations in 1996 that showed a power source weight reduction of 75%. The quiet operation along with the ability to refuel much like an engine was well accepted by the user and numerous applications were investigated. These programs are now aimed at further weight reduction for applications that are weight critical; system integration that will demonstrate a viable military power source; refining the user requirements; and planning for a transition to engineering development.
Sustainable Electrification Solutions for Developing Countries
The International Energy Agency estimates that by 2030 still over 1.2 billion people worldwide will not have access to electricity. The vast majority lives in rural areas in developing countries, where the extension of the national grid is often not feasible. Consequently there is often no plan in place to give the rural population access to electricity, which is fundamental to an acceptable quality of life. e.quinox, a student led charitable organization at Imperial College London, has spent the last years developing and testing sustainable electrification solutions for these areas. e.quinox's model is based around central energy generation in an Energy Kiosk and decentralized distribution through Battery Boxes. Currently e.quinox is operating three Energy Kiosks in rural Rwanda, providing 400 households with access to electricity.
With growing attention to sustainability and recognition of the impact of global warming problems, energy supply and consumption have become critically important. This paper presents the construction of a modeling platform accommodating cooperative energy management systems (EMSs), which virtually produces the model of a smart city with a distribution network (DN) by using a wide range of data obtained from the real world. The platform involves models of various EMSs, governing the operation of a power system or controlling consumer-installed devices, and simulating the power flow, electrical losses, and voltage in the DN. In addition, indices measuring the sustainability of the model city, such as CO2emission, are estimated from scenarios, for example, photovoltaic system installation, electric vehicle penetration, etc. The results can be visually displayed and the platform is highly versatile and applicable to various types of issues associated with smart cities. Two case studies are presented in detail.
The principal issues faced in intelligent building design and construction are presented. The components of the intelligent building are placed into four main categories-facilities management, information management, connectivity, and overall control-and each of these is examined. Multitenant shared services, the changing nature of building components, and the benefits of intelligent building management are briefly discussed. Six stages in the realization of an intelligent building are defined, and its cost benefits are examined.<<ETX>>
