Power factor, nowadays, is a critical matter. The ever increasing utilization of power electronics in all kinds of industry applications and the severe standards requirements are pushing the research toward new solutions to keep the industrial power factor around certain values. Switched capacitors banks bring together problems that are not easy to solve, such as parallel resonance and overvoltage. This article describes the application of a hybrid power converter as an active line conditioner. The hybrid converter basically is a power converter bridge with two GTOs that transform it into a fully controllable inverter. Therefore, this power converter allows independent control of voltage and displacement factor. When appropriated controlled, this converter can produce part of the reactive power consumed by the load. Made with a well known technology, this converter is suitable for large power compensation applications. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented. A control strategy based on learning is also proposed. This structure, an hierarchical approach, uses hints, coded in fuzzy conditional rules, to train a neural network responsible for power converter variables manipulation.
The semiconductor industry has entered a period of great promise destined to be the most fruitful and rewarding in its history. This potential has been recognized by governments, major non-electric companies, communications and media organizations, with all exerting strong external forces on directions and strategies ....Concurrently, the rate of technology advancements continues unabated with major technology turnovers occurring every five to seven years. Each advance is more demanding, pressing for internal capabilities to design and manufacture devices and the need to meet critical requirements for interfacing with external users .... Do these forces present challenges that require new approaches and strategies by the semiconductor industry, or are they large-scale versions of similar forces that have been faced by industry in each of the major technology events of the past 25 years? ....These vital issues will be assessed.
The stories of three leaders in the Japanese electronics industry are related to give some insight into the differences and similarities between management in the US and Japan. The leaders discussed are Konosuke Matsushita, Kanjiro Okada, and Koruji Kobayashi. Quality, excessive division of labor, graceful growth, and effective manpower for a breakthrough are then discussed, showing that quality, innovation, and breakthrough each require different management approaches. Probability of success in technology transfer is also considered.<>
The proposed Electronic Industry Association standard for control of home appliances, the Consumer Electronic Bus (CEBus), is described. CEBus can be retrofitted into existing homes, will be usable with any electronic product, and will have distributed intelligence in each piece of equipment. It will provide control of all home electronics, from burglar alarms to washing machines.<<ETX>>
