  • Study on lithium-ion secondary battery for implantable artificial heart

    In the totally implantable artificial heart system now being developed by the authors, seven lithium-ion secondary batteries connected in series are used as the backup secondary battery. In this paper are reported the results of investigations made on the charging and discharging characteristics of four kinds of lithium-ion secondary batteries using different cathode active materials and electrolytes. It is found that, of the four kinds of batteries under examination, one that uses LiNi/sub 0.8/Co/sub 0.2/O/sub 2/ as cathode active material and electrolyte B is most suitable, because with this battery the charging time is shortest and the temperature rise at the time of discharging is least. When these lithium-ion secondary batteries are used to drive a totally implantable electrohydraulic artificial heart, it is found that the system is capable of continuous operation for about an hour with a pump output flow of 7.6 L/min and a power consumption of 17.8 W.

    Optimal control theory is applied to the design of a pressure regulator for an axial piston pump and single-stage electrohydraulic valve combination. The control valve has been modeled and an optimal control law has been formulated. The time response curves due to a step input in flow rate and in current input to the servovalve have been obtained for the open loop and for the optimal control system. The results have been compared to those in which the supply valve to the swashplate actuators was not modeled. Controlled system modeling of the servovalve significantly improves the system's response frequency and pressure peaks.

  • Adaptive nonlinear feedforward control of an electrohydraulic camless valvetrain

    Camless engine operation offers potential benefits for making a high- performance engine. Control of the peak value of engine valve lift is a critical step in achieving these benefits. Nonlinearities and parameter variations in the valvetrain dynamics restrict the performance that can be achieved by the traditional PID feedback control approach. An adaptive control algorithm is presented with judicious selection of the model structure, adaptation parameters, and controller configuration. The experimental results demonstrate superior transient and steady state performance.

  • Comparison between classical and fuzzy-controller for electrohydraulic axes

    Electro-hydro-pneumatic systems for the position, speed or force control are to day even more employed as actuation means for robots, machine tools, aerospace and other engines both because of their high dynamics and specific transmitted power. Due especially to the low price and the last achievements of the field of modern and robust control it became possible to answer the new requirements on higher dynamics and stability and to replace even the traditional electromechanical means. Our paper presents some comparative results of simulations of a electrohydraulic axis both with P, PID and fuzzy- logic controllers as preliminary steps towards their implementation on the HYPAS-simulation software as well as for some actual applications in the field of machine tools. Simulations are achieved both with the MATLAB/SIMULINKand HYPAS-simulation program. Experimentally investigations were realised on an actual three-axis Cartesian robot.

  • Active and passive side stick controllers in manual aircraft control

    A two-axis electrohydraulic servo-controlled side stick was used to study the manual control of aircraft with advanced control systems. The applied stick force can be made independent of the stick position. In case of an active side stick the applied stick force is used as the control signal to the aircraft, and aircraft state variables such as pitch and roll attitude or rate can be fed back to the stick position. With the passive side stick, the servosystem, as the control loading system of a flight simulator, simulates the dynamic characteristics of a mechanical mass-spring-damper control system. An experiment in which the influence of passive and active side sticks on manual control was compared under a wide variety of experimental conditions in a moving-base flight simulator is described. The simulator is described. The results show that the active side stick helps the subject improve tracking performance in both a disturbance task and a target-following task. The addition of motion cues improved tracking performance independently of the side stick characteristics and tracking task.<<ETX>>

  • Recurrent interval type-2 neuro-fuzzy control of an electro hydraulic servo system

    This paper presents a recurrent interval type-2 neuro-fuzzy controller which benefits from a sliding mode theory-based training algorithm. The recurrent interval type-2 neuro-fuzzy benefits from recurrent type-2 membership functions with interval variances which are trained by a novel training method. Furthermore, the adaptation laws considered for the parameters of the controller benefit from an adaptive learning rate. The stability of the proposed training method is considered using an appropriate Lyapunov function. The proposed method is simulated on an electro hydraulic servo system. The results of simulations show that the proposed method can control the system with a satisfactory performance.
