  • Design Of Electrochromic Hybrid Poly(3-Methylthiophene)/Wo<inf>3</inf>Materials Via Electrochemical Route

    Poly(3-methylthiophene) (PMeT)/tungsten oxide (WO3hybrid films were fabricated by electropolymerization of MeT monomers onto WO3coated indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slides, which were prepared by electrodeposition technique. Hybrid films synthesized electrochemically in 1butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4, 1butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (BMIMTFSI) and 1-butyl-1methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (BMPTFSI) were applied to electrochromic device designs. Electrochromic characteristics of the devices such as optical modulation, coloration efficiency, switching time and stability were evaluated as the materials were switched between oxidized and reduced states. We fabricated electrochromic hybrid films consisting of WO3and that exhibited a large, stable, and reversible electrochromic modulations with an applied electrical potential. Highest optical modulation was observed as 57.92% for PMeT/WO3/BMIMTFSI hybrid film. The hybrid films also show stable electrochromism even after 1000 scans. The electrochemical, structural and morphological analyses of the fabricated films were performed by using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), X-rays Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). CV results revealed that PMeT /WO3hybrid films have much more electrochemical activity than those of WO3and polymer film1. In hybrid films, crystalline structures decreased compared to WO3, and more amorphous arrangements have been introduced2. The morphological properties of the hybrids changed depending on characteristics of ionic liquids.

The response time was mostly function of the electrolyte conductivity. The RC constant was from 0.23 s for a film of 1 /spl mu/m in acetonitrile 0.25 M LiClO/sub 4/ to 3.1 s in propylene carbonate 0.3 M LiClO/sub 4/. Electrolyte influence was studied by chronocoulometry in water: HiClO/sub 4/, NiClO/sub 4/; H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/; H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/; in propylene carbonate and acetonitrile LiClO/sub 4/. The stability of polypyrrole coatings was studied upon repetitive cyclic voltammetry. The best result was obtained in propylene carbonate. Films only lost 2.5% of charge (C) after 7000 cycles. Polypyrrole- latex coatings have no interest for electrochromic devices by itself, but it can be used as a first conducting layer for displays or electroluminescent diodes. Polypyrrole latex is also very interesting for condensers and for high power capacitors.

At the former two states, the c-axis length of the monoclinic WO3films was found to expand slightly compared with that of the latter state after annealing. These results were consistently explained in terms of the protonation and hydration of WO3.

  • Electrochromic Device Integrated With GaInP/GaAs/Ge Triple-Junction Solar Cell

    We report the fabrication of a complementary electrochromic device (CECD) in the form of glass/indium-tinoxide (ITO)/NiO/gel-polymer electrode (GPE)/MoO<sup>3</sup>/ITO/glass, and the integration of a CECD/GaAs-based triple-junction (TJ) solar cell system. It was found that the maximum transmittance in the bleached state was 68.05% at 580 nm. With a solar radiation intensity of 100 mW/cm<sup>2</sup>, it was found that an optical contrast in transmittance at 580 nm could reach 58.73%. It was also found that the coloration time and bleaching time of the integration CECD/TJ solar cell system were 6 and 15 s, respectively.

    Vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) was widely studied as a functional of electrochromic materials (EC) in the electrochromic devices (ECDs) for the features of good transmittance modulation, good Li+ions intercalation ability. However, it represents low electrical conductivity, poor cycle reversibility. Much scientific research focused on the study of inorganic metal oxide/conducting polymer-based hybrid film due to improved electrochromic properties1,2.

  • The characters of WO<inf>3</inf>electrochromic film prepared by sol-gel method

    Electrochromic device is made up of transparent conduction layer, electrochromic layer, electrolyte layer and counter electrode layer. In this paper, we used a sol-gel method, which could decrease the cost, to prepare the WO3electrochromic film. We firstly spin-coated the precursor on the ITO glass and then annealed the WO3film at different temperature. Finally, we covered the electrolyte layer on the WO3film and assembled it into electrochromic device. The film was investigated by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV spectrophotometer. We found the precursor's color will change from yellow to white after it was stirred over 4h. After comparison, the film annealed at 573K could get the highest contrast ratio.

  • Design and optical modulation of electrochromic windows

    The fabrication and design of electrochromic smart windows based on anodically coloring conductive polymers and cathodically coloring transition-metal oxides are described. Some fundamental and practical aspects of the complementary five-layer transmissive electrochromic devices are presented. The electrochromic layers are prepared by new large-surface coating techniques. Solid, gelled, or glassy polymers were used as ionically conductive electrolytes. The electrochemical and optical characteristics of all solid- state, five-layer, electrochromic devices are discussed.<<ETX>>

  • Electrochromic device with functions of rapid switching duty cycle and infrared suppression

    In this paper, the electrochromic device with functions of rapid duty cycle and infrared (IR) suppression. The electrochromic device is simultaneously not only having high optical modulation but also IR-suppression by using the multilayered AZO/Ag/AZO structure. The AZO/Ag/AZO structure is using to be transparent electrode and the nano-crystalline WO3is using to be electrochromic layer. The electrochromic device showed an optical modulation (ΔT) at a wavelength of 550 nm was 74.8 %, which is the difference between the transmittance of the colored state (14.61 %) and that of the bleached state (89.36 %). The response time of the device is found to be about 11.9 s for colored state and 6.8 s for bleached state.

  • Electrochromism and photochromism in MoO<inf>3</inf>films

    Electrochromic devices for use as alphanumeric displays have been the subject of recent interest. Their optical absorption is changed when current passes through them or if exposed to uv light. Electrochromic materials are generally transition metal compounds such as WO3and MoO3. Some people have suggested coloration occurs by electrochemical redox. Others have proposed that coloration results from electron filling of deep traps incorporated during film deposition. We studied electrical and (uv) photo-coloration of MoO3and found that both electrical and photo-coloration are accompanied by a chemical phase change. Based on this, together with electrical charging/discharging characteristics, the conclusion is reached that both photo-and electro- chromism in such materials is chemical in nature. The significance of this, regarding electrochromic devices is discussed.
