  • Designing the dispatch stage of a superscalar microprocessor

    The design of a superscalar microprocessor poses several challenging problems concerning both its architectural conception and VLSI implementation. This paper discusses the main aspects in the design of the dispatch stage of the Superflux superscalar processor. First, it presents a methodology directed to the cooperative development of a large VLSI project. Then, it shows how the methodology is applied to the design of Superflux's dispatch stage. The approach described can be immediately applied or easily adapted/extended to other large VLSI designs. Although superscalar processors are now present in systems from microcomputers to large multiprocessors, few papers have been published about the practical design of these devices. This paper contributes with an introductory view to this task.

Digital, bit-serial, communications allow fast, reliable and efficient transfer of data.

  • An efficient version model of software diagrams

    Various types of diagrams are used to represent the design of software systems. During the design phase, versions of a diagram may be created like other design documents and source code, and it is necessary to manage them efficiently. However, traditional configuration management systems and some object-oriented database management systems that provide object versioning are not suitable for managing versions of a diagram. In this paper, we propose an efficient version model of software diagrams. This model reflects the common characteristics and structure of software diagrams, and revisions of a diagram are managed by operation delta and object visibility. A merge model for versions of a diagram is also presented at the end of this paper.

  • Adding real-time filters to object-oriented specification of time critical systems

    We describe Real-Time Object-Z (RTOZ), a language with real-time extensions to Object-Z, and describe informally its semantics. The novelty of our approach lies in the minimal set of syntactic extensions to Object-Z and in the introduction of real-time filters for the separation of real time constraints from the functional specification of objects. Both the functional specification and filter specification for any time critical system can be developed using the syntax of RTOZ. The semantics of RTOZ provides a consistent mapping between the classes in an Object-Z specification and their corresponding real-time constraints. We illustrate the expressive power of RTOZ with a case study.

  • A New Approach to the Emission Computerized Tomography Problem: Simultaneous Calculation of Attenuation and Activity Coefficients

    In order to obtain truly quantitative reconstruction of gamma-emitter concentration in Emission Computerized Tomography (ECT) the attenuation within the region of interest has to be accounted for. In this report we propose to calculate simultaneously attenuation and activity concentration coefficients. Starting from the system of non-linear equations which describes the model of single photon gamma-ray emission in a discretized form we show how to reduce it to a mixed convex-concave feasibility problem and apply to it our method of Cyclic Subgradient Projections (CSP). This approach is discussed and some experimental results in its favor are presented.

  • The distance transform algorithm on a two-processor computer

    This paper contains the description of the implementation of the weighted distance transform for digital image analysis on a two-processor shared memory computer. The computer is a SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) computer and the algorithm is implemented using POSIX threads.
