  • The making of the special issue on the application of information technologies to engineering and science education

This paper presents an overview of the special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Education which was an experimental team effort to try and address some of the difficulties in applying information technologies to the creation, review, dissemination, and archiving of multimedia-rich contributions in engineering and science education. The solicitation and review were done electronically using the World Wide Web (WWW) and a restricted access server. The dissemination of the contributions used WWW/CD-ROM technology as a practical means for the IEEE Education Society to electronically distribute and archive the multimedia material containing video, audio, graphics, and code.

The article reviews and summarizes perspectives of electronic publication gained through experience in publishing, with CD-ROM/WWW technology, the August 1996 IEEE Transactions on Education special issue on the application of information technologies to engineering and science education, as well as Rapid Publication Supplements to the November 1997 and November 1998 issues of this Transactions.

  • Work in progress - studio-based signals and systems

Signals and Systems is a course that is taught virtually at every engineering school in the USA using very traditional lecture/exam techniques. Although various instructors have augmented their class with Web-based demonstrations and labs, the focus has not been on inquire-based methodologies. In this project, the University of St. Thomas' Signals and Systems course is being totally redesigned to make it much more inquiry-based. As part of this project, we rethought the content and methodology resulting in a totally new class that covers the traditional subjects in an exploratory way. New 'lectures' developed for the class directly incorporate hands-on computer use during the class using a studio format. These new exercises are a hallmark of the revised course that was taught in Fall 2004. Evaluations and recommendations from that class will shape future offerings

  • Publication of archival journals accompanied by CD-ROMs

This contribution documents some of the ideas, processes and procedures developed for publication of professional journals accompanied by CD-ROM disks during publication of the August 1996 and November 1997 issues of the IEEE Transactions on Education. A fairly detailed account of both the philosophy behind, and the process of, producing the August 1996 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Education was included in that issue in a contribution entitled "The making of the Special Issue on the Application of Information Technologies to Engineering and Science Education". The present collection of documents neither repeats nor summarizes the content of that document. Instead, it concentrates on the refined processes and procedures implemented during publication of the November 1997 issue.

  • Make the World a better place: An association-industry-academia partnership

This paper presents details of a program initiated by the IEEE Central Texas Section Education Society Chapter to stimulate passion among high school students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and to increase the participation of girls in STEM fields. The program includes participants from professional associations, industry, and academia. We describe the elements of this program (including the use of a fabrication lab or makerspace, mentoring, outreach events, curriculum design, metrics, and a replication handbook), the benefits to and contributions of each of the participants (the IEEE Central Texas Section, Tech Shop, Dripping Springs High School, and Texas State University), and the near-term and long-term objectives.

  • IEEE Education Society: Global leader in Engineering Education

The IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) is pleased to be a sponsor of EDUCON and technical co-sponsor of TAEE. EdSoc leaders view this conference as vital for carrying out the mission of our society and believe that EDUCON will be at the forefront of global Engineering Education in the future. In this talk, I will describe some of the history of the Education Society, its recent strategic planning process, and its hopes for the future. What is the Education Society? In April 2009, EdSoc leaders developed new vision and mission statements to introduce EdSoc to the world. The vision of EdSoc is “The IEEE Education Society strives to be the global leader in Engineering Education”.

  • How the VESIT Student Branch grew

VESIT, the IEEE Vivekanand Education Society's Institute of Technology creates a path for engineering students to travel on their way to become technically sound professionals. This paper describes the growth of the VESIT Student Branch, which can be attributed to the dedication of the unit's officers and active members who hold frequent meetings to plan events, review previous activities, and discuss new ideas for initiatives. Thus numerous accomplishments of the VESIT Student Branch continue and their aim is to provide their members with the best possible facilities with the limited funding available

  • The role of IEEE in engineering accreditation

One of the most significant activities which the IEEE conducts in the area of education is accreditation. In addition, this activity is of critical importance to a significant portion of the members of the Education Society. Within the United States, IEEE is a participating body of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which has been designated by the US Government as the entity for accrediting programs in engineering and technology. As the world moves toward a global economy and engineering talent flows among countries throughout the world, the need for cooperation in accreditation will increase. As a worldwide organization, the IEEE is strategically positioned to play a vital and central role in engineering accreditation on an international scale. The author examines the IEEE's position within the US accreditation structure, the worldwide environment for accreditation, the international issues which are currently being addressed, and finally some potential future directions.<<ETX>>

  • Work in Progress: European Education without Borders and the Challenges for Technology as Mediator

The immediate future for European education, training and lifelong learning is intimately connected with the Bologna process. The main objectives of the Bologna process are to obtain convergence of European higher education systems, and to improve student and teaching staff mobility within Europe. Against this background, the European Association for Education in Electrical and Information Engineering takes part in several Thematic Network projects financially supported by the European Union (EU). These actions are also supported by several IEEE Education Society European Chapters. By encountering the difficulties and showing possible solutions, this currently performed work aims at providing overview of the specific orientation in the field of Electrical and Information Engineering Education in Europe. Using new technologies for new purposes is the core of its target
