    We describe an image analysis system for handling complex and noisy images of forms and bank documents, such as business checks, personal checks, or bank deposits. Some of these document types have no standardized layout, requiring a careful analysis of the whole image, to find out where the relevant information, for example the courtesy amount, is located. Each element in the image is first classified as being part of machine printed text, handwritten text, or as being a graphical element, such as a line. To obtain a reliable identification of these different elements under noisy conditions, a set of templates is scanned over the image, extracting such elements as strokes, line end stops and corners. From this representation a quick and robust analysis of the image's content is possible to identify the different parts. Once a set of candidate subimages has been found, they are sent to a field recognition system. We describe an example of one such system, which locates and reads courtesy amounts on US checks.

  • Hypermedia conference proceedings

    Conference proceedings like many other documents are increasingly converted from hardcopy to online. This trend is being accelerated by the recent development of the World Wide Web. The article summarizes the online, hypermedia proceedings of the recent conference, INET'95. The online document, called hypermedia proceedings was developed in the very short time of three months with a multi national collaborative effort. The hypermedia proceedings were made available for access two months prior to the conference date. This allowed people to read the papers and comment on them before they came to the conference. The hypermedia proceedings server even read the abstracts for the user using natural or artificial voices.

  • A syntactic approach for processing mathematical expressions in printed documents

    We propose an approach for understanding mathematical expressions in printed documents. The overall approach is divided into three main steps: (i) detection of mathematical expressions in a document, (ii) recognition of the symbols present in the expression and (iii) arrangement of the recognized symbols. The detection of mathematical expressions is done through recognition of a few most common symbols and exploiting some structural features of the expressions. A hybrid of feature based and a template-based technique is used for the recognition of symbols. A two-pass approach is used for arrangement of the symbols. The first pass (scanning or lexical analysis) performs a micro- level examination of the symbols in order to identify the symbol groups occurring in them and to determine their categories or descriptors. The second pass (parsing or syntax analysis) processes the descriptors synthesized in the first pass, to determine the syntactic structure of the expression. A set of predefined rules guides the activities in both the passes. Experiments conducted using this approach on a large number of documents show high accuracy.

  • Integrated Configuration of Enterprise Systems for Interoperability -- Towards Process Model and Business Document Specification Alignment

    Enterprise systems (ES) can be understood as the de facto standard for holistic operational and managerial support within an organization. Most commonly ES are offered as commercial off-the-shelf packages, requiring customization in the user organization. This process is a complex and resource-intensive task, which often prevents small and midsize enterprises (SME) from undertaking configuration projects. Especially in the SME market independent software vendors provide pre-configured ES for a small customer base. The problem of ES configuration is shifted from the customer to the vendor, but remains critical. We argue that the yet unexplored link between process configuration and business document configuration must be closer examined as both types of configuration are closely tied to one another

  • Content-based drama editing based on inter-media synchronization

    Automatic image recognition is usually difficult. However, drama is composed of not only image but also sound and script. Therefore, higher level recognition of drama which cannot be achieved by the image analysis will be realized by integrating image analysis, sound analysis and document analysis. In this paper, focusing on the semantic descriptions in the script, content- based drama editing based on inter-media synchronization is proposed. In the proposed method, inter-media synchronization between image, sound and script is carried out using DP matching. Then, the script is edited using an ordinary text editor. Finally, the editing of drama is carried out by selecting and aligning the image and sound based on the edited script. Therefore, the proposed method can realize effective and semantic-based video editing by handling smaller and more abstracted data. The experimental results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method.
