Interferometric three-dimensional displacement measurement using geosynchronous circular SAR

The nadir track of geosynchronous satellite can be circular with appropriate orbit parameters. Based on the characteristics of the interferometric phase of geosynchronous circular SAR (GEOCSAR), the method of three-dimensional (3D) surface displacement estimation is proposed. Correspondingly, the retrieval matrix is derived and then is optimized by choosing appropriate parameters. The simulation results validate the correctness of the analysis.

  • A multi-mode optical fibre sensing system using white light interferometry

    Firstly, the theory of the white light interferometer is presented. This is followed by minimum peak height difference and related experimental results. The curve fitting signal processing scheme and the best order of polynomial for curve fitting are then discussed. Finally, displacement measurement with and without curve fitting signal processing is examined. The results show that, with a two wavelength source, the central fringe can be identified if the sampling gap is smaller than the maximum sampling OPD gap. The noise in the system can be reduced by the curve fitting technique proposed. The best order of the polynomial used to carry out curve fitting is four according to the experimental results and the analysis.

  • Crosstrack profiles of thin film MR tape heads using the azimuth displacement method

    We report a new technique for measurement of crosstrack profiles of magnetoresistive (MR) read elements in tape heads. This method minimizes errors due to tape tracking and quickly delivers crosstrack profiles with good signal-to-noise ratios. In this technique the read element is located downstream from the write head in a typical tape head configuration. AC erased tape is passed over the head and the write head is turned on. The profile of the read element is scanned by changing the lateral position of the read element relative to the write head by varying the azimuth angle between the head and tape with a positioner. Offtrack position is calculated from the linear displacement of the positioner used to generate the azimuth angle. The measurement technique is well suited for characterizing MR read heads for tape servo applications and for examining performance reliability and repeatability.

  • Horizontal-vertical coupling correction at Aladdin

    Horizontal-vertical coupling and vertical dispersion can arise from vertical misalignments and tilts of bending magnets, quadrupoles, and sextupoles. Experimental measurements and accelerator code studies suggest that the vertical dispersion from bending magnet errors and quadrupole height errors is largely compensated by optimization of the vertical closed orbit. The majority of the coupling and vertical dispersion remaining after orbit optimization may be the result of quadrupole tilts on the order of 1-2 mrad. A correction scheme is being implemented in which the excitation of skew-quadrupole correctors is determined from measurements of the vertical orbit displacements resulting from horizontal steering bumps and vertical dispersion.

  • A lane keeping system with a weighted preview measurement

    This paper proposes a new lane keeping system (LKS) based on a weighted preview measurement. The paper first identifies shortcomings of existing methods that use the sole measurement of lateral displacement error at a preview distance or at the center of gravity. Then, the novel idea of computing a weighted average of both measurements is proposed. The stability of the resulting LKS is analyzed and the improved performance of the resulting LKS is supported by simulation experiments.

  • Noise reduction, error analysis and experimental fiability for 3D deformation measurement with digital color holography

    This article presents an analysis of phase errors generated by advanced noise removal algorithms applied to phase maps obtained from digital holographic interferometry. The phase error is separated into two contributions that are the error generated by the denoising method and the error due to the phase noise. A comparison of several noise removal algorithms is presented according to four criteria to assess independently the two types of errors from simulated data. Application to 3D displacement fields measurement of composite material is presented.
