Data extraction from Web forums based on similarity of page layout

2009 International Conference on Natural Language Processing and Knowledge Engineering, 2009

Web forums contain a wealth of information resources. Forum data can be widely used in areas such as Internet community mining, information retrieval and public opinion analysis and so on. This paper solves the problems of what should be extracted and how to extract from the Web forums. Aimed at the limitation of current methods to extract data from Web ...

An Emotion Oriented Topic Modeling Approach to Discover What Students are Concerned about in Course Forums

2018 IEEE 18th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT), 2018

Course forums offer an interactive channel for learners to express opinions and feedback, which contain valuable emotions and topic information towards courses. In this paper, we propose an emotion oriented topic probabilistic model that can be used to calculate distributions of emotion-topic over words to discover what students are most concerned about. An experiment on real-life data indicates that students ...

Information Seeking Can Be Social

Computer, 2009

For reasons ranging from obligation to curiosity, users have a strong inclination to seek information from others during the search process. Search systems using statistical analytics over traces left behind by others can help support the search experience.

Browsing Web Through Audio

2004 IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages - Human Centric Computing, 2004

VoiceXML (2004) is fundamentally designed to make the Internet content accessible via audio. In other words, a VoiceXML document renders information through sequential audios. Supporting VoiceXML documents, voice browsers allow users to browse the Internet independent of visual attention, and thus make information accessible to visually impaired people. In order to make information universally accessible to all people, Web designers ...

Interoperability in asynchronous collaborative learning forums

IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. Proceedings., 2004

"Asynchronous collaborative learning forums" (abbreviated as: ACLF) is the generic title given to a category of educational technologies that are widely used, variously understood, but that manifest specifiable uniformities in their structural and behavioral characteristics. This paper enumerates these uniformities in a manner such that they can be represented as a general, abstract model independent from, but also descriptive of ...

  • Data extraction from Web forums based on similarity of page layout

Web forums contain a wealth of information resources. Forum data can be widely used in areas such as Internet community mining, information retrieval and public opinion analysis and so on. This paper solves the problems of what should be extracted and how to extract from the Web forums. Aimed at the limitation of current methods to extract data from Web forums, an automated method is proposed to extract metadata from Web forum pages. The method processes in two steps. We firstly recognizes the topic-block by making full use of the special layout of the Web forum pages, then extract metadata from the topic-block by making use of statistical regularity of the metadata, the whole process done without manual work. Experimental results show that this method performs well both in adjustability and accuracy.

  • An Emotion Oriented Topic Modeling Approach to Discover What Students are Concerned about in Course Forums

Course forums offer an interactive channel for learners to express opinions and feedback, which contain valuable emotions and topic information towards courses. In this paper, we propose an emotion oriented topic probabilistic model that can be used to calculate distributions of emotion-topic over words to discover what students are most concerned about. An experiment on real-life data indicates that students had a positive attitude for knowledge applications, a negative experience for the learning system, and expressed confusion about the final exam. We also visualize the temporal trends of emotions of the whole group and the groups with different levels of achievement. The proposed model has a potential in discovering students' emotions in their feedback, thus improving the online learning experience, and identifying at-risk students timely.

  • Browsing Web Through Audio

VoiceXML (2004) is fundamentally designed to make the Internet content accessible via audio. In other words, a VoiceXML document renders information through sequential audios. Supporting VoiceXML documents, voice browsers allow users to browse the Internet independent of visual attention, and thus make information accessible to visually impaired people. In order to make information universally accessible to all people, Web designers need to present two versions of Web pages, one in the HTML format and the other in the VoiceXML format. Manually maintaining a correspondence between HTML and VoiceXML documents is time-consuming and error-prone. It is, therefore, desirable to automatically transform the representation of Web content from HTML to VoiceXML. With HTML/VoiceXML documents organizing information in a hierarchy, it is feasible and natural to represent their structures using graphs. This abstract introduces a graph-grammar-based approach. Graph grammars, which originated in the late 60s and have stepped into a period with theoretically sound and well-established foundation (Rozenberg, 1997), provide a natural approach to describing a class of graphs sharing common structural properties. In particular, hierarchical structures, e.g. trees, can be intuitively visualized as graphs and clearly specified through graph grammars. Then, the conversion from HTML to VoiceXML can be achieved through graph transformation repetitively from bottom to top

  • Interoperability in asynchronous collaborative learning forums

"Asynchronous collaborative learning forums" (abbreviated as: ACLF) is the generic title given to a category of educational technologies that are widely used, variously understood, but that manifest specifiable uniformities in their structural and behavioral characteristics. This paper enumerates these uniformities in a manner such that they can be represented as a general, abstract model independent from, but also descriptive of specific implementations and systems. This paper then outlines such a model, and shows how it would allow collaborative learning activities to be analyzed, evaluated, and managed in ways that are both flexible and platform- independent.

  • DSL Forum's Focus: Quality Delivery and Management of IPTV

  • An Evaluation of Different Types of Blended Learning Activities in Higher Education

Blended learning has provided benefits to higher education. Therefore, universities tend to introduce blended learning activities to improve their teaching-learning practices. There are different types of blended learning activities such as forum based discussions, online games, and assignments. In order to investigates students' satisfaction towards different types of blended learning activities and their usefulness for students to score well in examinations, an action research was conducted over a period of three years from 2015-2017. The results of the study informed that students preferred to engage with activities that started in classroom and continued online. Also, students found online discussion were less useful than the other types of blended learning activities. Based on the finding of the research paper discusses how blended learning activities should be designed to make them more useful and effective.

  • An online introductory computer programming course using Matlab: Design steps and what to expect

The usefulness of online and hybrid delivery methods in education has long been realized and with the advancement of computer and communication technologies and the Web based authoring tools, their effectiveness have been further extended. We are at a point that online and hybrid course offerings for undergraduates are quickly becoming an integrated and regular part of engineering departments' course offerings. Many institutions are offering online courses, as part of their regular schedule. In this paper, based on our experience that started with hybrid delivery and ultimately extended to a full online offering, we will present a set of recommended steps that can be used as a guide by those who are interested in designing an online introductory computer-programming course. We will then present a set of observations that we feel needs to be considered and discussed by the research community. The paper will include examples of students' comments, which were received in teaching evaluations, for hybrid and online offerings.
