The former can be distinguished from the latter two by analyzing the phase resolved partial discharge pattern. Further analysis of the decomposed gases accumulated from discharges reveals that CF4 is a useful indicator for discharge on spacer, and H2 occurs only with crackle discharge. Thus the combination of the above two measures provides powerful aids in the detection of crackle discharge in GIS.

Experimental conditions are air atmosphere, and relative humidity was varied to 0, 25, 50, and 75 %. The quantity of partial discharge pulses can be evaluated with number of pulses. The degradation characteristics of epoxy resin surfaces were analyzed FTIR and SEM.

  • Optical observations of discharges across dielectric surfaces in vacuum and in SF6

    Any electrode system immersed in an insulating medium must invariably involve solid insulators in some part of the supporting structure. When an electric stress is applied to the electrodes, the solid dielectric fails by a surface flashover along the dielectric. At stresses much below the flashover stress, glows or incipient discharges occur. Optical observations of these early discharges in high vacuum and SF6 environment, using a high speed image intensifier/converter camera, are reported below.

  • Development of Flashover Current Simulator for ESD Ground Testing Simulating GEO Environment

    Solar array paddle sizes have been larger to generate power that is enough to operate many devices in only one satellite. The cover glass on solar array paddle can be charged on GEO environment. A flashover discharge is triggered by an electrostatic discharge and propagates at a velocity with discharging the amount of charge stored on the cover glass. Therefore, the charge and current waveform of flashover discharge depend on the paddle size and differential voltage. ESD ground testing needs simulating the flashover current, because the large paddle can cause large flashover. A flashover current simulator has been developed so far in our laboratory.

    The tangential component of electric field along the interface of oil and pressboard causes surface discharge (SD) or surface tracking (different stages of SD is shown in Fig. 1) which can damage the whole or part of insulation structure. Partial Discharge (PD) activity at the interface begins before full surface discharge [1]. In this work, an experimental study was conducted to characterize surface partial discharge pheno mena at synthetic-ester and pressboard interface with moistur e impurities.

  • A model of the cathode spot glow discharge for a cathode with inclusions of low work function material

    A model that describes the self-maintained glow discharge for a composite cathode in which cathode spots are formed on low work function material inclusions is presented. Based on this model, expressions are obtained for the radius of the spot, the cathode voltage, and the spot current as functions of Pd (where P is the gas pressure and d is the thickness of the cathode layer), the parameters of the inclusions, and the basic material matrix are obtained. Numerical results for the case of a glow discharge in 75 torr neon gas with a copper cathode matrix and inclusions of LaB/sub 6/ are presented. The average radii of inclusions were 0.05 and 0.015 mm. Conditions under which the glow discharge migrates from the inclusions and begins to spread onto the surface of the basic matrix are obtained. The transition of the glow discharge into a contracted state, depending on the structure of the composite material, is also considered.<<ETX>>
