2020 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and North American Radio Science Meeting

The joint meeting is intended to provide an international forum for the exchange of information on state of the art research in the area of antennas and propagation, electromagnetic engineering and radio science


2020 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium (RWS)

RWW2020 will be an international conference covering all aspects of radio and wireless. RWW2020's multidisciplinary events will bring together innovations that are happening across the broad wireless spectrum. RWS2020, this conference application, acts as the main conference for the entire RWW of events that includes the following conferences: PAWR2020, SiRF2020, WiSNet2020, and TWiOS2020 (IEEE Topical Conference on RF/microwave Power Amplifiers, IEEE Topical Meeting on Silicon Monolithic Integrated Circuits in RF Systems, IEEE Topical Conference on Wireless Sensors and Sensor Networks, and IEEE Topical Workshop on the Internet of Space IoS, respectively). In addition to traditional podium presentations and poster sessions, tracks for IEEE Distinguished Lectures, Sunday half-day workshops, Monday panels, and a demo session are planned. A RWW2020 plenary talk are a parallel IoT Summit are planned. A student competition is also planned.

    This chapter describes the diversity transmission system, multi‐input multi‐output (MIMO) systems, adaptive automatic equalizers, error control techniques, trellis modulation, adaptive interference cancellation, and voice coding. It discusses the MIMO systems as diversity systems and space‐division multiplexing (SDM) transmission placing emphasis on explanation of their principles. The chapter gives a short introductory description of automatic equalizers and applications to mobile radio channels. To cope with errors in digital transmission, it discusses two countermeasures, namely, error correction and retransmission. Trellis‐coded modulation is a combined coding and modulation technique: coding and modulation are integrated to achieve better error rate performance without compromising bandwidth. Interference cancellation must be adaptive since both the interfering signal and the desired signal are time varying in mobile radio communications. The most straightforward system for voice coding is the usual analog‐to‐digital conversion at periodic sampling instants.

    There are a variety of other aperture antennas which find use in specialized applications that have not yet been considered. This chapter introduces the areas of arrays and reflectors come together in the reflectarray antenna. In design and operation, reflectarrays are inherently a combination of arrays and reflectors. Since the 1980s, reflectarrays have increasingly been made with microstrip patch elements on a substrate with a metal ground plane. These microstrip reflectarrays are illuminated by a feed and consist of a number of discrete resonant elements that are conventionally passive and arranged on a plane or conformal to another surface such as a cylinder. The chapter also includes details of some other aperture antennas not treated elsewhere, in particular, lenses, and the Fabry‐Perot cavity antennas. The Fabry‐Perot cavity is highly efficient and flexible as a radiator, but in its basic form, it is a narrowband device.

The implication of directional varying noise for the optimum choice of receiver antenna is explored.

    This chapter focuses on radio planning and link budget analysis. The goal of radio planning is to provide sufficient coverage, capacity, and service quality. Basically, the radio planning process is composed of three steps: dimensioning, detailed planning, and optimization. The first step is collecting the required system coverage, capacity, and service quality and then taking into consideration population, geographical area (dense urban area, urban area, and rural area), frequency, propagation model, and so on. In the optimization step, measurements from the wireless networks are taken and the settings of the base stations are adjusted to achieve a better coverage and capacity. The dimensioning step starts from the link budget calculation. Traffic engineering deals with statistical techniques to predict the behavior of users and share network resources. The chapter explains the application of the Erlang theory in traffic models.

It uses relative power densities of radiation received on three orthogonal antennas with the assumption that the AKR is circularly polarized. The method is checked for a case of AKR source location provided by Polrad radio-spectro-polarimeter on board the Interball-2 satellite. Projection of the source location along magnetic field lines coincides with the active auroral arc observed by the Polar UV imager.

  • Prediction of Operational Characteristics of Adaptive Antennas

    This chapter focuses on the adaptive antenna operational characteristics in the space, angle, time, and frequency domains. Then it presents two statistical approaches. The first model is based on information about the maximum radio signal strength indicator (RSSI), minimum time delay, and the direct azimuthal relationship to the desired subscriber, obtained through the analysis of the topographic map of the area of service and the combined stochastic model. The second model is based on the error minimization of the position of any subscriber located within various urban environments. These models are verified experimentally and compared with our stochastic model. There are three approaches that have been introduced recently for localization of any base station (BS) or any mobile subscriber (MS) antenna in built‐up areas for various scenarios of BS antenna elevations with respect to buildings’ height profile. These are discusses in the chapter.

  • Antennas

    This chapter discusses antennas' basic characteristics, specifications and performance parameters needed to select the right antennas for given indoor requirements. Antennas are often characterized by various parameters that define specific characteristics of antenna performance. Antenna parameters parameters are often used when designing an indoor wireless system and are also given by antenna manufacturers to assist system designers in the correct selection of the antenna type. The choice of antenna parameters is not only influenced by their technical performance but also by its mechanical characteristics and appearance ‐ there are specific indoor environments in which antennas need to be 'disguised'. The chapter presents various types of antenna: linear wire antenna, loop antenna, antenna arrays, travelling‐wave antenna, broadband antennas, Yagi antenna, aperture antennas, horn antenna, monopole antenna and parabolic (dish) antenna. It also discusses some of the antenna performance issues, such as mean effective gain (MEG), radiation pattern extrapolation and reliability of radiation patterns.
