The International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) is the flagship conference of the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society and the world’s premier networking and exchange forum for researchers in the highly active fields of theory, design and implementation of circuits and systems.   • Convergent communication technologies and services with context awareness

    Summary form only given. The worlds of universal telephony and best-effort data networking, two disparate communication services in the past, are converging to one in which the user's multimedia experiences are becoming increasingly rich, personalized, spontaneous and interactive. The so-called converged network has set the stage for user-centric broadband services. For example, on-demand media is expected to encompass a multiplicity of information sources (from MP3 download and digital audio broadcast to mobile video), networks (from dialed-up to WiMax) and terminal devices (from multimedia PDA with 3G mobile to HDTV). This calls for innovations in efficient and intelligent content processing, distribution and information management. Even more fundamentally, as service personalization (in the general term of context which includes situation, location and availability) becomes the critical differentiation factor in the market, the new convergent communication may demand an architectural focus that will prove indispensable in the trustworthy support and management of context-aware services. In this talk, we articulate for such a vision and point out technical challenges that have to be harnessed in order to realize the vision of right information and right service at the right time.

  • Audio contents adaptation using user's preference on sound fields in MPEG-21 DIA

    In this paper, we explain XML schema for describing the user’s preference on sound fields using MPEG-21 DIA (Digital Item Adaptation) and the real-time implementation algorithm for adapting audio contents to sound field preference. MPEG-21 DIA standards define XML schemas (syntax and semantics) for describing the consumption environments of multi-media resources to adapt or transform multimedia resources such as terminal environment, user’s characteristics, and/or network environments. We propose XML schema to present user’s preference on a sound field as a room impulse response or perceptual parameter set. We also suggest a novel adaptation algorithm for sound field preference. For adapting audio contents to a sound field, they shall be convolved with the room impulse response of the sound field. For real-time application, the fast circular convolution algorithm in frequency domain was used instead of linear convolution in time domain.

  • Time-Frequency Domain Fast Audio Transcoding

    Bitrate or format transcoding of digital audio data is extremely important in many different types of applications. Transcoding can be performed via complete decoding and re-encoding, but this entails a very high cost in computing power. In this paper, we propose a transcoding method employing frequency domain signals. This method can dramatically reduce the memory requirement and computing power, that is very suitable for computing and power limited applications, such as multimedia recording and playing in handheld devices

  • Are We There Yet? User-Centered Temporal Awareness

    It's not unreasonable to think that the technologies we use in our daily lives could help us make these sorts of decisions. For example, analysis of computer usage patterns can reveal our probable availability to colleagues. But, even better, it should be possible for devices to make some of these decisions for us while still leaving us with a comfortable level of control. We refer to such systems as exhibiting temporal awareness. One way to realize temporally aware computing in everyday use is via wearable devices. Such devices could collect time-related information from the items and environments we interact with and create a personal temporal model. They could then use this information to change our behavior.An example of temporal awareness in action, the AreWeThereYet? Player is a digital audio player that can compose a program of audio media likely to fit within the user's available listening time. AWTY estimates this time using the listener's current location and predicted destination as well as some knowledge of previous journeys.
