A re-entrant cylindrical cavity has been adapted to measure the dielectric constant and power factor of small disk samples of insulating materials. The methods of measurement, mechanical details, and electric coupling and detecting circuits all are described. A single cavity can be utilized only over a frequency range of about 1.5 ratio from lowest to highest frequency. Therefore, several different-sized cavities would be required to cover a range of frequency from 50 to 1,000 megacycles. An accuracy of = 0.00005 in tan δ and = 1 per cent in dielectric constant may be obtained in routine measurements. Because the cavity has a very high Q(&>2,000), it is much more sensitive to low-power-factor dielectric samples than any conventional coil- and-capacitor resonant circuit.

This guide describes very low frequency (VLF) withstand and other diagnostic tests and measurements that are performed using VLF energization in the field on shielded power cable systems. Whenever possible, cable systems are treated in a similar manner to individual cables. Tables are included as an aid to identifying the effectiveness of the VLF ac voltage test for various cable system insulation problems.
A temperature-stable high-Q dielectric resonator, developed for microstrip circuits, and used to stabilize the microstrip oscillator, will be described.
The various loss aspects of the parallel-plate microwave dielectric resonator for the TE<sub>01delta</sub> mode is studied from a modified field model. The main merit of this field model is that it provides very simple electromagnetic field expressions of this field mode. Various methods of calculation of losses are discussed. The analyses of the calculated results of conductor and radiation losses are given. The relationship of the loss with the dimensions of the device is introduced. By conducting practical measurements to compare with theoretical calculation results, this modified model has shown dramatic improvement over the unmodified model. The dielectric loss measurement by using this parallel-plate dielectric resonator is also studied.
