Daylighting is the practice of placing windows or other openings and reflective surfaces so that during the day natural light provides effective internal lighting. Particular attention is given to daylighting while designing a building when the aim is to maximize visual comfort or to reduce energy use.     Nowadays daylight apertures in buildings are designed on the bases of overcast sky conditions in wintertime in Slovakia and Czech Republic. The criterion is the relative value of the Daylight Factor in its average 0.9% in two reference points in the middle depth of the room. Commonly, in practice as a consequence are designed windows roughly 1.5 - 1.7 m high in living rooms. The proposed European standard FprEN17037 is introducing a new criterion median exterior horizontal illuminance with the required indoor illuminance 300 lx in the middle of the room depth or 100 lx as minimum close to the rear wall. This study discusses problems of the design of window size in residential buildings and consequences of the new median criterion as well as the required interior illuminance in absolute lux values.

As Pakistan is short of energy resources, it imports expensive oil that underlines the need for energy conservation. Buildings have the largest potential for energy saving especially for lighting by using more efficient Light emitting diodes (LEDs), Compact fluorescent light (CFLs) and by using daylight as 38% of the residential electricity is consumed for lighting only. This study investigates the potential of reducing energy consumption by using daylight through domes in roofs. Roof domes affect the energy required for lighting, heating and cooling. As EnergyPlus software has the capability to analyze daylight and energy flow in buildings, it is used for this study. Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) hourly data for Karachi is used as input to the EnergyPlus program for the calculation. Simulations show that the optimal dome area is 0.155% of the floor area to have the minimum total energy consumption in Karachi. By using the optimal dome area, reasonable illuminance distribution are obtained in the building even during the month of December. Calculation result also show that the optimal area of the dome saves Rs3651/- per year in electricity bills for the house hold. The use of roof dome of optimal size therefore saves electricity bills of the building owner as well as helps to overcome energy crisis in the country. Also a planned location of the dome in the roof will achieve a desired lux level at any location inside the building.

  • Venetian Blind Control System Based on Fuzzy Neural Network for Indoor Daylighting

    For the indoor daylighting need, venetian blinds are a key element in the passive control of building's vision environment. They help to control glare, daylighting, and overheating, all of which affect both the comfort of occupants and a building's energy saving. Especially, for the indoor shading and daylighting requirement, the smart control system, which has both function of adjusting the venetian blind position intellectively and indoor lighting control automatically, is built depending on fuzzy neural network in this paper. The venetia blind angle feedback control technology is also used in this system for the blind position self-adaptive control., and in addition, the relation model between the venetian blind shading angle and the visibility for occupants is established as well as fuzzy neural network model for calculating venetian blind operation angle. The theory arithmetic for control and main segments in this system are discussed too. The conclusion is presented that the optimal angle of venetian blind operation can be accurately controlled, and the position is changeable to sun position under condition of indoor visual comfort.

    This paper presents light calculation program is composed of natural lighting or day lighting prediction and artificial lighting or lamp lighting. Natural lighting calculation use CIE overcast sky to be an luminance calculation method and artificial lighting use lumen method to calculate number of luminaires for appropriate illuminance. By inspection illuminance in each points of area, point by point calculation use to inspect illuminance from daylight and lamp lighting in Isolux diagram. In line graph shows the result of program show that illuminance between 6.00am - 6.00pm of Thailand to use daylight to decrease energy. From this point, this program is very useful for lighting control to be designed lighting system for energy saving in the way of dimmer or appropriate the number of luminaries

  • Optical fibre based smart illumination system

    Electricity crisis is a very common fact in today's world. Conventional lighting system requires huge electricity consumption. So some smart systems are used for illumination purposes which can maximize the utilization of available natural resources. One of the smart options which can replace the conventional lighting system using electricity is the use of natural resources for illumination where sunlight can't reach in the day time. The sunlight harvesting system is that smart lighting system which can save electricity in subways, offices, malls, etc where daytime lighting is very much required. This smart system consists of optical fibers, focusing lens assembly, photo sensor and microcontroller. After transmission through the optical fiber the ambient light is focused on the lens assembly for illumination in all the places where the sunlight cannot be accessed directly. By using the Photo sensor assembly the proper position of the sun can be tracked which maximizes the light input into the optical fiber system. This assembly is also required to measure the intensity of sunlight to avoid the unfavorable lighting condition (cloudy days, etc.). According to the measured value the electric light intensity will be controlled automatically which results less energy consumption.

  • An Automatic Sun Tracking System for Fiber Optic Lighting

    An automatic sun tracking system for fiber optic lighting is proposed. Using STC89C52RC microcontroller as the core controller, together with the steering gear to control the system daylighting, the system is able to trigger the sun tracking system and auxiliary lighting system automatically for overheating protection and brightness adjustment. A practical sun tracking system with hardware and software is implemented and validated by experiments.
