    THERE has been a lot of recent discussion in the media concerning the concept of big data. Few if any of the applications of big data have addressed engineering management needs and concerns. In this short opinion piece we describe a particular application of big data to understanding technology readiness. We first introduce the topic of big data and technology readiness, and then describe the need for automated and distributed approaches to identify promising new technologies. Such a vision may be possible, but it may be a ways out. In the meanwhile we identify four tips to guide best practice while we await a fully functional system.

  • NONREVENUE WATER

    Nonrevenue water (NRW) is a critical issue facing water utilities around the world. The UK approach to NRW management is based on achieving NRW reduction targets set by the regulator. Private water companies have incentives, such as increased returns to shareholders, related to achieving individual targets. A report by the World Bank defines NRW as 'the difference between the volume of water put into a water distribution system and the volume that is billed to customers'. NRW includes three primary components: unbilled authorized consumption, apparent losses, real losses. The four pillars to control real loss include: current annual real losses (CARL), economic level of leakage (ELL), unavoidable annual real losses (UARL) and four arrows representing how real losses occur. Improved leak detection practices correctly identify leaks within the distribution system, fixing the leaks, and prevent future water losses.

  • Design of a Payload Data Handling System for Satellites

    With the different and diverse requirements of the research, military, agricultural or scientific satellite missions, more and more organizations and institutes are participating in the satellite missions on the payload research and applications. The scientific and housekeeping data of the payloads is important for research and applications. The payload data handling system is interfacing the payloads to the onboard data handling system. Onboard systems can be standardized thus enabling a suitable and convenient platform for production and the third party, which will save the cost, time and personnel. Satellite subsystems are introduced first in this paper. Based on the requirements of the payload data handling, design of a universal payload data handling system is proposed. The functional modules, the electrical interfaces and protocols are described in detail. Finally, an implementation of the payload data handling is shown here. Standard bus interfaces and protocols like MIL-STD-1553B bus, RS485 bus, UART, RS422 and PCM (Pulse Coding Modulation), are adopted. The design of the payload data handling system in this paper, which is high performance, reliable and reusable, has common standard interfaces for the payloads, and can support multiple missions.

  • Component-Based Distributed System Analysis and Design of EDI

    This paper describes the background and development trends of EDI system, also gives an analysis of the existing EDI system which is summed up by the basic method and main functions, furthermore the existence of not unified operational standards, difficulty of integration, the inflexibility and poor- security of the used system and other outstanding issues are also discussed in the paper. The basic principles and ideas which are based on component technology and distributed processing technology are introduced to develop software. A set of components which are appropriate for distributed EDI System is designed. The components are assembled into a common distributed EDI system through component assembly technology. The paper has discussed the work process of distributed component-based EDI system and described the practical significance of the system and applications and prospects.
