  • Simulation of the brushless DC machine

    Research efforts on the brushless DC machine (BDCM) have produced a computer simulation model of the machine applicable for analysis of the machine during fault conditions. Several failure modes have been studied using this simulation technique. Modeling the motor during flux weakening, bearing failure, armature winding open circuiting, and armature winding short circuiting along with the operation of the machine under normal conditions is presented. This simulation model will facilitate further study of the BDCM and its utilization in the electromechanical actuation and control application.<<ETX>>

  • A Novel Soft Switching Inverter for BLDCM EV Propulsion System

    A novel zero voltage transition (ZVT) parallel resonant DC link voltage source inverter (VSI) is proposed for brushless DC machine (BLDCM) electric vehicle (EV) propulsion system. The presented soft-switching inverter is constructed from the conventional one by simply augmenting auxiliary resonant DC link, and the soft switching is easily achieved by suitable controlling of the auxiliary switch. The zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation for all switching devices in inverter has been achieved both for motoring and braking state. The DC link voltage is clamped to power voltage. Control of resonance is based on time sequence without testing any current or voltage, so pulse width modulation (PWM) control is simple. The operation principle and control scheme of inverter are analyzed. Computer simulation results reveal good performance.

  • Investigation on excessive commutator and brush wears in DC traction machines

    The paper presents an experimental investigation on excessive brush and commutator wear in DC traction machines. An advanced computer measurement system is employed for data acquisition so that all measured data are recorded continuously in revenue raising services. The measured parameters include the mechanical vibration of the motor and its carbon brushes, a video camera image of sparking at the brush-commutator interface, transient currents of armature winding and carbon brushes. The paper reveals the relationship between harmonic currents and mechanical vibrations in DC traction motors. It concludes that the mechanical resonance of a motor at a certain locomotive speed is a major cause for the excessive brush and commutator wear.
