These studies typically employ biotelemetry tags attached to animals to collect raw sensor data from tri-axial accelerometers. The lifespan of such tags is constrained by their power usage and is often a limiting factor when performing behavioural studies for extended periods of time. This study considers the effect on power requirements when performing statistical behaviour classification on the tag itself, as opposed to at a later stage, after raw data transmission. Such animal-borne classification is particularly attractive when live behavioural updates are required. Experiments using specially-designed low-power biotelemetry sensors demonstrated a 27-fold reduction in energy consumption when classification was performed on the tag, as opposed to conventional post-processing techniques. By performing on-board statistical behaviour classification, the power requirements are drastically reduced, thereby prolonging the lifespan of the tag.

This paper also describes how the application of e-Livestock in the relationship between Government (G), Business (B) and Citizens (C). Various suggestions regarding future works that can be carried out related to e-Livestock are also given in this paper.

  • Emergency Response Capabilities-Past and Present

    This paper focusses on emergency response capabilities at nuclear plants with the TMI-2 accident in perspective. The major thesis is that accident prevention by plant operators is the keystone, and the development of the Safety Parameter Display Systems (SPDS) is an essential operator's aid for thinking-through, and formulating strategies for preventing serious accidents from occuring. Human limits for processing information under stress is matched to the SPDS capability for displaying key plant safety variables in a concise, readily understandable manner. The industry response and general experience with the SPDS is reviewed. It is suggested that the SPDS, together with the development of intelligent routines, will play a major role in future improvements in emergency response capability.

  • Design of a low cost sensor system for the determination of the number of somatic cells in milk using bioluminescence analysis

    Mastitis, inflammation of the mammary glands of the cows, causes big financial losses in milk production each year. As these losses have been calculated to reach $50 million US in several countries, a good screening method for the rapid detection of mastitis helps minimize this problem. The determination of the somatic cell content of milk is a valuable means of detecting mastitis. Conventional methods used to estimate it include electronic cell counting and microscopy techniques. The presence of several chemical compounds in milk, has also been suggested as providing the basis for new screening methods to detect mastitis. One of the most promising of these methods is that described in this paper: the determination of the number of somatic cells in milk using bioluminescence analysis. So, this detection system can be used directly by the own cattleman without the need of waiting for the reports of the Laboratory.

  • Cattle's fur detection in complex background based on Graph Cuts

    Segmentation becomes a difficult task if the objects are not homogeneous and have overlapping characteristics. The Graph Cuts methods combined with Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) for initialization label has been adopted to detect cattle object in an image with complex background. The RGB colors and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) textures are used as the features set. This method can robustly segment the cattle beef image from its background. This segmentation method produces the average of accuracy value up to 90%.
