  • APT high energy linac intertank assembly design

    The 700-MHz superconducting high energy (HE) linac in the Accelerator for the Production of Tritium (APT) accelerates a 100 mA continuous wave (cw) proton beam from 211 MeV to a final energy of up to 1.79 GeV. The design of the 700 MHz radio frequency (RF) cavities has been optimized for two beam velocity intervals, /spl beta/=0.64 and /spl beta/=0.82. Two intertank designs, medium-/spl beta/ and high-/spl beta/, have been developed for these two velocity intervals. Three cryomodule designs have been developed corresponding to three different lattice periods in the APT HE Linac. Room temperature quadrupole doublet magnets placed in the intertank assemblies between the cryomodules focus the beam. Each quadrupole magnet contains additional dipole steering windings to correct for small beam misalignments. The intertank assembly between cryomodules also includes beam diagnostic instrumentation, the interconnecting beam pipe, flanges, and the vacuum interface. This paper presents the physics parameters, the results of 3-D magnetic field calculations, and the detailed design of the quadrupoles and the associated intertank assemblies for the medium-/spl beta/ and high-/spl beta/ sections of the HE Linac.

A 30 GHz gyrotron (n=2) with rf-output power of 10 kW is under development with the TE/sub 12/ operating mode. An output power of 12 kW was obtained (efficiency 24%).

  • The characteristic of fermentation hydrogen production with pure microbial species R3 in continuous stirred tank reactor

    Hydrogen production from diluted molasses by pure microbial species R3 was investigated in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) under continuous flow condition in this paper. The reactor used in this study was made of organic glasses. The experimental results indicated that the hydrogen-producing system could attain a stable state for hydrogen production with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h, influent COD concentration of 4000 mg/L and a temperature of (35±1)°C. During the steady period, the biogas yield kept about 6.6L/d with hydrogen content of 59.4%. The COD removal and ORP were 28% and -445~-420mV, respectively. The primary liquid fermentation products were ethanol and acetic acid. From the study, the strains R3 of high efficient hydrogen production can be applied to bio-hydrogen process of continuous flow.

The experimental results indicated the CSTR reactor could achieve continuous biohydrogen production with an initial aerobic-pretreated sludge (VSS) of 17.74 g/L, temperature of 35°C ± 1°C and HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 6 h. The high yield of 11.61 L/d hydrogen was obtained in this study with OLR (organic loading rate) of 24 kg COD/(m3·d). The content of ethanol and acetic acid in liquid fermentation products was 83% which indicated the ethanol-type fermentation formed.

  • Experiments in syllable-based recognition of continuous speech

    An exploratory implementation of a syllable-based recognizer is described. Continuous speech is first divided into syllabic units, and the units are then matched against syllable templates using a dynamic programming algorithm. A hierarchical transition network is used to limit the syllable search to possible continuations of the current partial sentence hypotheses. Competing hypotheses are pruned by a 'beam search'. Experiments are reported on automatic recognition of English sentences with a 70-word vocabulary and restricted syntax produced by one male speaker. 85% of the sentences were correctly recognized. Comparable results were obtained for a similar task in French using a female speaker. The method is computationally efficient: real- time performance on dedicated hardware should be obtainable without difficulty. A method of scaling the distance measures used in the syllable matching is described. This scaling takes into account variability in syllable production, both as a function of position within the syllable and as a function of the various spectral parameters being used.

  • Release Stabilization on Linux and Chrome

Despite regular rapid release cycles, a rush period occurred before release stabilization, and stabilization periods could vary up to 10 days.

  • Mechanical results of the CEBAF cavity series production

    Interface dimensions of the full production run of 360 CEBAF cavities manufactured by Siemens are summarized. Analysis indicates that length tolerances of /spl plusmn/2 mm and fundamental power coupler location tolerances of /spl plusmn/0.15 mm are achievable on future procurements. Vacuum leaks were a concern early in production but have now been overcome: 2 K helium leak rates integrated over 22 vacuum seals have been measured on 84 cavity pairs and a roughly normal distribution of the log/sub 10/ (leak rate) is seen, centered about a rate of 10/sup -10.2/ torr-1/s.<<ETX>>
