  • A Context-Sensitive Rule-Based Architecture for a Smart Building Environment

    In a smart building environment nomadic users can benefit from specialised context-sensitive services. These can increase productivity and offer an improved lifestyle for users. The data management system-context architecture (DMS-CA) has been designed to provide these services. The DMS-CA is novel in providing a completely generic system that is both user-friendly and efficient. The system is generic in that it can be tailored by the system administrator (using XML specifications) for a particular environment of context information inputs and a set of services. In addition, the actual rules that determine which services are triggered by which combination of contextual inputs are determined by the individual user in a user-friendly manner. Thus the generic architecture can be easily deployed for a particular building and an individual user. Generic solutions are sometimes inefficient but this system has been designed to be highly efficient through using an event-based architecture and dealing with time in a special way. The DMS-CA has been deployed for a building incorporating a wireless sensor network, and shown to provide a high quality, efficient context-sensitive data delivery service.

  • A Systematic Analysis and Design Approach to Develop Adaptable Services in Service Oriented Computing

    Service-oriented architecture (SOA) provides a considerably new of invoking functionality. Service providers are to develop and deploy reusable services, and service consumers are to discover right services. A main difficulty in developing generic services is to design services generic enough so that the services can be effectively adapted to diverse service consumers. Moreover, this adaptation takes place at runtime, and hence dynamic adaptation and compositions are essential in service-oriented computing (SOC). For this, service variability among different consumers and contexts should be analyzed and designed into service components. In this dissertation, a service-oriented analysis and design (SOAD) process is presented, which focuses on modeling service variability and mismatch, engineering adaptability into service components and adapters, and enabling dynamic composition of services.

  • A staged approach for TMN to TINA migration

    The TINA architecture is often perceived as a service layer specialized framework; however a detailed examination of the architectural context and ongoing work in the field demonstrates that it is not so, and that the TINA architecture can also be envisioned as a network management framework if care is taken about some TMN specifics. After making that point, the article proposes a conceptual architecture for interworking TMN and TINA based systems. It then describes a component architecture for a migrating OSI MIB that demonstrates concretely the feasibility of building a TMN-able agent running in a TINA based environment.

  • Towards dynamic configuration of distributed applications

    Configuring distributed applications at deployment time requires the introduction of high-level features such as transaction and synchronization into application code. Component models like CORBA Component Model (CCM) or Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) allow programmers to declare in deployment descriptors which services have to be plugged into components. However, these approaches do not allow a dynamic integration of new services. In this paper, we propose a reflexive approach allowing service integration into a component at runtime. When a new service is added to a component, the combination with existing services is managed dynamically by the platform.
