A few years ago the drum controller was quite sufficient for any motor then in use. Since then the use of larger motors and the need for automatic features, unattainable in a simple manner with drum controllers, have resulted in the development of a great variety of magnetically controlled switches, and of various means for operating them in control systems.

  • Solvent extraction in hydrometallurgy: Present and future

    During the past 10 years, there have been incremental advances in the application of solvent extraction to process hydrometallurgy. The most cited areas in the literature include chemistry, chemical engineering, pilot plants, and plant operation. Within these areas, there were considerable interest in synergism, diluents, degradation, contactors, surfactants, hydrometallurgical applications, environmental and secondary applications, and health and safety. The summary to the present is followed by a prediction for the future in the above areas of interest. These include the use of speciation; improved understanding of the role of surfactants on the system; optimization through modelling, pilot plants, and contactor selection; improvements in plant operation; further new applications; and plant safety. The review has indicated that considerable knowledge is now available to optimize and improve on process design and plant applications.

It is extremely doubtful whether any simple and wholly reliable method can be obtained whereby contactors (or other forms of switches) can be used to short-circuit the rheostat automatically when the liquid rises to its maximum level.

    The SAE Formula Hybrid competition is event where students from many different schools put their engineering knowledge to use to design complex hybrid racing systems; Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has been competing in this competition since its inception. This paper discusses the design on the team's energy storage and accumulator design for the 2012 competition. This design is required to follow all 2012 rules set forth by SAE International and this paper discusses the concerns of the design regarding these rules.

  • Hum detecting equipment for contactors

    Analysis of voltage, hum, current, frequency etc., are the important parameters for hum monitoring. The method proposed here uses a couple of non audio signals from MAX4465 microphone of range 80-120V and frequency 50Hz. Based on the specifications given by the contactor here we designed a circuit for the parallel measurement of hum and the respective voltage. The hum is measured automatically using the Lab VIEW software and voltage at which hum produced is being detected. This method is much more impressing because of its distinct advantages like accuracy, ease in usage and reliability.

  • Ethernet/IP Applications for Electrical Industrial Systems

    This paper investigates the use of Ethernet/IP communications protocol for data acquisition and control of electrical networks in an industrial environment. A high-speed communication connection among all the devices operating in a distribution network using breakers, contactors, relays, power meters and other devices may allow a large amount of data to be exchanged to and from an industrial/utilities control system. A survey of existing topologies for interface is shown, together with configurations that are be possible using Ethernet/IP standards. The possibility of integrated control of the electrical system into a utilities control network is discussed. The benefits that can be derived from the use of high speed communications such as Ethernet/IP to monitor and control electrical systems are discussed.
