Present practise in system grounding

Electrical Engineering, 1931

In this article are presented the principal findings of the Institute's joint interconnection subcommittee after canvassing 32 of the country's leading power companies. By comparing the results with those outlined in a similar report made in 1923, several noteworthy trends are indicated. Of particular note is a decided drift toward solid grounding.

Communication in industrial research laboratories

IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, 1984

Industrial physicists publish their research results in internal company reports as well as in physics journals. In internal reports, research findings are communicated primarily to engineering and management groups. Because of the specific needs and preferences of these groups, the criteria for internal reports are different from those usually considered best for an outside publication. For the same reason, oral ...

Layout and language: exploring text block discovery in tables using linguistic resources

Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2001

Identifying the textual content of table cells requires, in part, the successful resolution of ambiguities confusing multi-row cells and single-row cells, as well as the resolution of other layout based ambiguities. This paper investigates the application of linguistic resources to this problem and discusses algorithms that exploit both phrasal dictionaries and bigram language models for discovering the content of cells ...

  • Communication in industrial research laboratories

Industrial physicists publish their research results in internal company reports as well as in physics journals. In internal reports, research findings are communicated primarily to engineering and management groups. Because of the specific needs and preferences of these groups, the criteria for internal reports are different from those usually considered best for an outside publication. For the same reason, oral presentations in a company differ from those for a professional society meeting. The criteria for communication inside and outside a company are compared since physics graduates entering industry must be made aware of these differences — preferably before they graduate.

  • How important is data quality for evaluating the impact of EDI on global supply chains?

In practice a growing number of companies report negative impacts of using EDI, which are attributed to the impact of poor data quality. This result is in contrast with current EDI theory, which shows that EDI leads to less data entry errors and hence to a positive role of data quality in EDI. Based on the current literature on data quality and communication, this paper develops a theory on the role of data quality in an EDI enabled business process. The theory hypothesizes that EDI has a positive effect on the reliability and relevance of the EDI information. However, EDI has a negative impact on the context of the EDI information. This means that EDI requires a higher degree of context alignment between the sender and receiver of the EDI messages. If this higher degree of context data quality is not established, EDI will lead to a negative impact on process performance because the poor data quality in the context leads to more errors or more prevention in the ordering process.

  • Scientific Diving Fatalities, 1970 through 1984--A Fifteen Year Review

Over the last three decades, american scientists have been using diving techniques in their research. The files of the National Underwater Accident Data Center were reviewed for references to diving for science. Twenty cases contained such references. Each case was examined and it was determined that ten might be loosely described as involving scientific diving. These ten were further investigated and six were found to fit a rigorous definition of diving science. Each of the twenty cases is presented and suggestions on how to avoid such incidents are made. Other data available on the frequency of nonfatal accidents is presented as is information on the population of diving scientists. The conclusion is reached that diving under the auspices of a diving control program similar to that pioneered at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography has an excellent safety record.

  • An empirical study of maintenance issues within process improvement programmes in the software industry

Anecdotal evidence from our work with software developers suggests that maintenance is a significant problem for software development companies. A problem that is absorbing increasing amounts of precious development effort. In parallel, software companies are increasingly applying process improvement principles to development problems. In this paper we discuss how maintenance is addressed in process improvement programmes. We look at how well maintenance is addressed by formal process models like CMM. We also present empirical evidence from our study of process improvement in UK software companies. Our main findings are that although developers report that maintenance is indeed a problem, it is not always their most important problem. Furthermore, our findings also suggest that companies are often not well prepared for the maintenance phase of developments and that formal process improvement models do not pay enough attention to maintenance.

  • Ways to CASE: An analysis of selected CASE experiences

In the fall of 1991, Swiss companies from all industries were asked to document their CASE experiences with a structured report. Thirteen accounts were published in 1992. Most companies are past the stage of experimentation with CASE. Some of them use CASE quite successfully on rather broad scale, while others do not seem to be able to apply CASE widely despite positive evaluations and test results. The main findings of these reports, some cautionary remarks, and a few recommendations for future CASE users are given.
